POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Sales Engineer serves as the technical authority for the Heavy Lifting Systems business, leading application engineering, technical solution development, engineering coordination, and technical project definition from customer opportunity through engineering release. This role bridges Sales, customers, and external engineers—owning application definition, technical scoping, and engineering coordination—while helping establish the foundational processes, standards, and documentation needed to evolve toward in-house engineering over time. In addition, the role blends sales support, application engineering, and technical oversight to ensure safe, compliant, and high-performance below-the-hook lifting solutions across North America, Europe, and Asia. Success is measured by proposal accuracy, technical quality, reduced engineering risk, and enabling successful customer delivery.

Following engineering release, responsibility for project execution transfers to the Customer Delivery & Installation Manager while the Technical Sales Engineer remains the technical lead for engineering support and technical escalations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead technical discovery with Sales and customers to define application requirements, operating conditions, and system scope for engineered lifting solutions.
  • Provide preliminary system sizing, application feasibility assessments, and configuration recommendations.
  • Translate customer and sales requirements into structured engineering scopes for outsourced engineering partners.
  • Own the technical definition of HLS projects from customer opportunity through engineering release, ensuring solutions are safe, manufacturable, commercially viable, and aligned with customer requirements.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with external engineering and fabrication partners for system configuration, structural calculations, and detailed engineering design.
  • Review and approve below-the-hook engineering drawings, calculations, and submittals.
  • Ensure compliance with ASME BTH-1, CMAA, OSHA, and Magswitch internal safety standards, global standards, and SB30.20 (Below the hook lifting devices).
  • Verify magnet selection, load paths, attachment design, safety factors, and review FEA when provided.
  • Deliver complete engineering packages, including drawings, BOMs, specifications, lift plans, and technical documentation to enable successful project execution.
  • Support service technicians and installation partners during commissioning or technical escalations (primarily remote).
  • Standardize engineering practices, reusable designs, and technical documentation to improve scalability, reduce engineering effort, and support the long-term growth of the HLS business.
  • Identify recurring application or installation issues and drive updates to engineering standards and design practices.
  • Drive efforts to standardize lifting system, sub-assembly, and component designs to reduce one-off customization where practical.
  • Develop Preventive Maintenance (PM) programs, spare part inventory, and customer best-practice guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related technical field (required).
  • Minimum of five years of experience in engineered-to-order equipment, lifting devices, cranes, rigging, automation, or heavy industrial machinery.
  • Ability to review CAD drawings, interpret FEA, and manage engineering documentation.
  • Occasional international travel as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Willingness to obtain PE licensure where appropriate and to establish and manage a network of licensed Professional Engineers authorized to review and stamp documents in accordance with applicable state requirements.
  • Experience with below-the-hook devices or crane systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of magnets or lifting systems.
