Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Public Health seeks a hands-on technician to operate, maintain, and calibrate a range of laboratory instruments. You will schedule routine maintenance, perform corrective work, and manage maintenance records using a CMMS, while ensuring compliance with CLIA regulations.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma, mechanical aptitude, ability to read schematics, and the physical stamina to lift 50 pounds and travel as needed.

  • Under general supervision operates, maintains, calibrates electronic, electromechanical, and mechanical laboratory instruments.
  • Schedule and perform routine preventative maintenance and calibration services.
  • Coordinate and perform unscheduled corrective maintenance.
  • Generate and maintain all equipment maintenance records utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and distributes them to the supervisors to ensure DPH's compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
  • Train less experienced staff and advise supervisors with selecting new instrumentation when necessary.
  • Create and maintain a milage/maintenance spreadsheet for Laboratory Vehicles
  • Provide billing for services rendered to outside agencies utilizing the "Standard Invoice and Payment System" and filing travel forms for reimbursement.

State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications, subject to approval by the SCDPH Chief Human Resources Officer, or their delegate.

  • A good mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate all types of mechanical hand and power tools.
  • Be able to read and understand electronic schematics and circuit diagrams.
  • Communicate effectively with the general public and staff members.
  • Ability to wear protective clothing.
  • Have vision corrective to 20/40 and not colorblind.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds to a height of 36 inches.
  • Able to bend, stand or sit for a long period of time.
  • Must be able to travel overnight for a period of up to four nights a week.
