Job summary

Garmin in the United States (Greater Kansas City area) seeks a Technical Lead Software Engineer - Java to be a key technical contributor and lead software engineer for major product development projects. You will drive architecture, mentor engineers, and collaborate with vendors to integrate external components.

You will work with Java, Spring Framework, and related technologies in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, with rotating on-call responsibilities for Garmin's 24/7 operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/CE/SE or related field with 9+ years of relevant experience.
• Demonstrated lead software engineer experience on projects with new markets or new technologies.

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Technical Lead Software Engineer- Java at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for being a key technical contributor and/or Lead Software Engineer in major product and/or application development project or software development for significant new applications of known technology.

Essential Functions

• Responsible for providing key technical contributions for major new products and/or applications including software development in Java or other selected languages
• May serve as a Lead Software Engineer for projects in new markets or relying heavily on new technologies
• Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced software engineers (Software Engineer 1 & 2 & Senior Software Engineers)
• Serves as architect for solutions that span multiple groups or disciplines
• Works with software vendors to integrate externally developed deliverables into projects, as required
• Evaluates new technologies, features and functions and offers suggestions
• Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as appropriate
• Defines general approaches and specific solutions to technical problems considered state of the art
• Applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to all assigned projects and resolves complex problems
• Provides significant contribution to software reviews across multiple product and/or application types
• Completes broadly defined complex tasks including taking conceptual ideas and putting them to practice by using creativity and ingenuity
• Supports working hours as part of a rotating schedule to provide on call support of Garmin's 24/7 operations

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
• Demonstrated experience in serving as the lead software engineer for projects in new markets or relying heavily on new technologies
• Mastered proficiency in writing software Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Rest, JDBC, SQL Server, HBase, Elasticsearch, Rabbit MQ, JMS, Redis, Memcached, Docker, Kafka as appropriate for performing the essential functions of this job description
• Demonstrated experience with architecting solutions for multiple groups and/or disciplines
• Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
