Job Title

Technical Director, Electrical Engineer

Location

Boise, ID; Madison, WI; Overland Park, KS; Minneapolis, MN – hybrid or remote possible.

Overview

Lead electrical power component design for industrial and government projects, creating construction drawings, specifications, bills of material, cost estimates, and power system studies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight, collecting and analyzing data from design site surveys, blueprints, GIS data, substation components, and procurement package development.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for mid‑level and complex projects, ensuring compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Apply advanced electrical engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases: concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Conduct investigations and inspections of site conditions, substation layouts, grounding grid designs, lightning protection, and power plants for conformance with standards.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare safety and phasing plans, updating infrastructure layout plans in coordination with owners and other disciplines.
  • Manage design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation, grading, drainage, pavement design, and construction safety plans.
  • Oversee development and implementation of future‑ready technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, cabling, conduit, and trenching design strategies.
  • Lead large‑scale electrical engineering projects, supervising budgets, tracking hours and expenses, and ensuring satisfactory subcontractor performance.
  • Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans, standby plans, and construction inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Engage with public or private entities to discuss electrical/engineering challenges and programs.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations, explaining research, findings, and recommendations.
  • Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements aligned with WSP standards.
  • Develop a client base for high‑level electrical engineering services and identify business development opportunities.
  • Mentor staff to support growth and professional development.
  • Stay current with latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on funded improvement projects and business development opportunities.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 12+ years of post‑education experience providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred).
  • Proficiency with electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build, and permitting.
  • Proficiency with infrastructure design and planning, including multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and apply engineering principles to plans and specifications.
  • Experience planning and conducting inspections and investigations of construction and design facilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both technical and non‑technical.
  • Strong self‑leadership and interpersonal communication for client, regulator, and team interactions.
  • Independent work and leadership of mid‑ to senior‑level team members with QA/QC adherence.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, and design software (CADD, ETAP, AutoCADD electrical, etc.).
  • Experience reviewing documents and preparing technical deliverables with high complexity.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for technical analysis and solution design.
  • Track record of coordinating and directing subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and harassment policies.
  • Flexibility to meet business needs and prioritize responsibilities under pressure.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Food & Beverage Industry experience.
  • Prior consulting or engineering services experience.
  • Previous experience with capital projects at a manufacturing company.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with Autodesk Revit.
  • Interest in managing a group of direct reports.
