Technical Consultant - System Engineering

Join to apply for the Technical Consultant - System Engineering role at Esri.

Overview

Serve as a Technical Consultant to our customers and their ArcGIS Enterprise systems with a focus on RDBMS (Relational Database Management System)/Enterprise Geodatabase (eGDB) refactoring, analysis, and optimization. Working with our team of ArcGIS Enterprise-focused System Engineers, this position will expand the breadth and depth of our consulting work in eGDB/RDBMS. Much of the team’s work is Enterprise Migration and Troubleshooting consulting. In migrations, database changes may include data centers, machines, RDBMS software releases, eGDB releases, and RDBMS products. In troubleshooting, you’ll determine whether the problem is in the RDBMS and contribute to diagnosis and optimization work when the RDBMS layer is a factor.

The position requires someone accomplished with RDBMS administration, performance analysis, and troubleshooting with at least one product (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and more) and an interest in developing skills in other RDBMS products. The ideal candidate will have an interest in ArcGIS Enterprise itself and growing into consulting efforts more focused on ArcGIS Enterprise technology layers, with opportunities to grow into other relevant data‑tier technologies (NoSQL, cloud-native, and more). The work is challenging and innovative as it addresses the liminal space of ArcGIS Enterprise and enterprise IT systems.

ArcGIS provides contextual tools for mapping and spatial reasoning so users can explore data and share location‑based insights. Esri’s Professional Services Division plays a crucial role in the innovation of the ArcGIS enterprise mapping and analytics platform. Our mission is simple yet powerful: enable user success, broaden the impact of GIS, and push our platform to make our technology better.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in advanced engagement types including:
    • Enterprise and Database Migration
    • System Challenge Resolution (Troubleshooting)
    • System Recovery Confidence Exercise
    • Disaster Recovery Protection
    • System Proof of Concept
    • Advanced ArcGIS Enterprise and Database Upgrades/Deployments
  • Employ knowledge of data tier technologies that complement RDBMSes (NoSQL, object stores, SAN, NAS, and more)
  • Apply understanding of server‑side servicing stack models, authentication methods (native credentials, domain‑based, SAML/OIDC, and more), and networking (TCP/IP, DNS, routing, TLS, and more)
  • Lead customers and colleagues with clear methodologies that provide shared understandings and repeatable, successful outcomes at the intersection of Esri and enterprise IT
  • Collaborate with Professional Services staff to solve difficult technical challenges and help less experienced colleagues build their capabilities
Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional experience in implementing and supporting RDBMS/GIS systems
  • Experience in database administration
  • Fluency with SQL for analytical objectives, data transformation, and procedure/function logic
  • Experience with troubleshooting technical issues with server systems
  • Clear methodologies that provide shared understandings and repeatability
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to customers, executives, other technical staff or non‑technical staff
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or related STEM field
Recommended Qualifications
  • Knowledge of/interest in ArcGIS Enterprise technology
  • Knowledge of/experience with scripting and/or programming languages of some type (shell, Python, PowerShell, and more)
  • Experience in system administration with Windows and/or Linux
  • Knowledge of/interest in networking concepts and topics such as HTTP, TCP, TLS, firewalls, DNS, forward proxies
