Job description

Hyperscale Data Center Implementation Engineer | Fiber Connectivity | Illinois (Relocation Support Available)

Datacenter People are currently supporting a global leader in optical fiber and connectivity solutions in the search for a Hyperscale Data Center Implementation Engineer to cover the Midwest region, based in Illinois.

This is a customer-facing technical role that combines engineering ability with a commercial, relationship-driven approach. You will act as the technical lead for assigned hyperscale data center sites, working directly with some of the world’s largest hyperscalers to drive the adoption of new connectivity innovations.

The role suits a technically minded person who enjoys working with people, whether you are already in a customer-facing position or a technical professional looking to take the next step into a more commercial role.

The Opportunity

You will be the go-to technical expert for hyperscale data center sites across Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota and potentially Indiana. This is currently one of the business’s most demanding and fastest-moving regions.

Working with strategic account teams, you will build relationships with customers, design consultants, installers and integrators, guiding new products from early engagement and field trials through to deployment.

  • Guide customers and installers on best practice for installation and deployment
  • Deliver pre- and post-sale technical messaging alongside the sales team
  • Feed customer insight and competitive intelligence back to product, engineering and R&D teams
  • Coordinate with engineering services on on-site technical support for key projects
  • Produce weekly trip reports and manage multiple priorities across several sites

Travel is up to 50%, mainly weekday travel across the Midwest region, with occasional support for other regions.

We’re Looking for Someone Who...

  • Bachelor’s degree (engineering, technical or science preferred, though other degrees will be considered alongside relevant experience)
  • 2+ years’ experience in sales, project management, data center products or data center design
  • Understanding of data center environments and how networks are deployed within them
  • Comfortable engaging confidently with customers, from site teams to senior leadership
  • Highly organized, able to manage conflicting priorities and switch quickly between tasks
  • Self-starter who works well independently in a fast-moving environment
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Based in Illinois within easy reach of O’Hare Airport, or willing to relocate (relocation assistance is available)

Experience with fiber optic cabling or structured cabling would be highly advantageous. Candidates from connectivity manufacturers, installers, integrators, hyperscale connectivity or network engineering teams, and colocation or enterprise data center environments will be considered.
