Job Summary

Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

Essential Functions: The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

  • Able to scrub any procedure in primary cluster skillfully.
  • Able to operate all equipment in primary cluster.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate computer by correct data entry.

  • Maintains certification (when appropriate).

  • Works closely with ACU and PACU, and attempts to assist them when requested.
  • Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) 5%
  • Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Maintains clutter free environment.
  • Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum.
  • Adheres to dress code.
  • Reports risk management concerns.
  • Assumes responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements: Safety/Fire; Blood Borne Pathogen; Hazardous Communication; TB; Department Specific; Age Appropriate Care.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Position Specific: Neuron/Infant; Infant totally dependent on care giver; Keeps safe.
  • Child: Explains procedures in language understood by child; Comforts child and stands by for induction to anesthesia; Maintains a quiet atmosphere during induction and awakening stages of anesthesia; Provides warmed blanket to maintain body temperature; Utilizes equipment and instrumentation appropriate for size.
  • Adolescent: Involves patient in discussion of procedure; Maintains privacy and confidentiality.
  • Adult: Culturally specific care; Maintain privacy and confidentiality; Utilizes equipment and instrumentation appropriate for size; Maintains safe environment.
  • Geriatric: Respectful, addresses by title and family name unless otherwise instructed not to; Provides warmed blanket; Protects skin with additional padding if needed; Involves patient in planning process and discharge planning.

Qualifications
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION: High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Either prior OR experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program preferred
  • REQUIRED REGISTRY OR LICENSE: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to travel to and between operating rooms at a rapid pace. May be required to wear protective clothing such as masks, gowns, and gloves. Regularly exposed to risk of blood borne disease. Must be able to work with electrical equipment. May be exposed to latex. Must be able to work alone, with others, and around others.
  • Required Professional License And/Or Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - NBSTSA
