Job summary

United Regional is seeking an Anesthesia Technician to support anesthesia providers by setting up equipment and supplies for procedures. You will coordinate stock with the Lead Anesthesia Tech, maintain inventory, and ensure aseptic technique and infection control throughout rooms.

Excellent English communication is required. A high school diploma and CPR certification are prerequisites; prior anesthesia equipment experience is preferred to deliver high-quality patient care.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills.
  • Able to set up invasive lines for fluid delivery and invasive monitoring using aseptic technique.
  • Current CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients to and from operating room according to policy and verify identity with two identifiers.
  • Assemble and set-up monitors and anesthesia equipment; provide technical assistance to anesthesia providers.
  • Order and maintain anesthesia supplies and equipment; coordinate purchases with Product Coordinator and Clinical Resource Manager.
  • Stock anesthesia machines and carts; maintain par levels and inventory locations.
  • Assist with set-up of invasive monitoring lines using aseptic technique.
  • Assist with intubations and care of fiberoptic bronchoscopes; maintain equipment cleanliness.
  • Maintain infection control by cleaning and disinfecting equipment and rooms daily.

Job description

Summary of Essential Functions


  • Requires high level of accountability for the set-up of anesthesia equipment and supplies in order to assist anesthesia provider in delivery of quality patient care.

  • Able to coordinate the ordering of all supplies and equipment with the Lead Anesthesia Tech.

  • Knowledge of fiber optic endoscopes for the management of difficult airways.

  • Practices principles of infection control and aseptic technique.

  • Able to remain calm and function in emergency, urgent and critical situations.

  • Utilizes Standard Precautions in job performance.


Educational Requirements


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Prefer previous experience with anesthesia equipment.

  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to prioritize functions of job description.

  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology and have basic computer skills.

  • Able to set up different types of invasive lines for fluid delivery and invasive monitoring, utilizing aseptic principles.

  • Able to troubleshoot, clean, disinfect and maintain anesthesia machines and monitoring systems.

  • Must have current CPR.


Physical Requirements


  • Lengthy periods of standing.

  • Ability to move gurneys, carts and equipment and assists with the positioning of surgical patients. Lift and carry instrument sets (trays) and various items of equipment.

  • Exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.

  • Involves minimal temperature and moderate noise level changes.

  • Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination.

  • Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Transports patients to and from operating room in a timely manner, according to policy. Identifies patient by two identifiers, utilizing patient name and six-digit medical record number. Utilizes Correct Site Surgery Protocol to verify correct patient, correct procedure and correct site. Utilizes good body mechanics when transferring to positioning patients.

  • Able to assemble and set-up monitors and anesthesia equipment as needed. Provides technical assistance to anesthesia providers in providing daily patient care. Able to order and maintain anesthesia supplies and equipment and to coordinate purchases with Product Coordinator and Clinical Resource Manager. Stocks anesthesia machines and carts as needed daily and maintains par levels. Maintains accurate site locations for inventory purposes. Assists with the set- up of invasive monitoring lines utilizing aseptic technique (CVP lines, Swan-Ganz, etc.). Assists with the set-up of arterial lines utilizing aseptic technique. Assists with intubations. Appropriately manages the care and disinfection of fiberoptic bronchoscopes after each use. Monitors and cleans anesthesia carts and anesthesia machines thoroughly and correctly daily.

  • Demonstrates ability to set up Fluid Warming System correctly. Responsible for the appropriate cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance of Fluid Warming Systems. Recognizes emergency, urgent or critical situations and calmly and efficiently initiates actions to correct situation.

  • Utilizes Standard Precautions according to policy. Assists in OR room turnover and cleaning of operating rooms between cases, and at the end of the day. Cleans room correctly and thoroughly according to policy in order to prevent cross-contamination and to promote infection control practices. Appropriately handles regulated medical waste and soiled linen.

  • Demonstrates accountability and responsibility when obtaining blood or blood products from Blood Bank or blood refrigerator in OR. Completely and accurately documents removal or return of blood units on patient blood usage logs. Demonstrates knowledge and accountability of protocol for care of specimens from time specimen is taken from room until returned to appropriate OR where correct patient is receiving care. Performs correct Order Entry for lab requests in computer system.

  • Runs errands as necessary and performs other duties as delegated by management.

  • Demonstrates high level of accountability and responsibility in job performance, and practices within ethical and legal guidelines. Completes reading assignments, videos and tests in a timely manner, with passing score of 80% on exams. Completes all specified competencies in a timely manner.

  • Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
