Job summary

Columbia Forest Products in Oregon seeks a Team Leader to supervise daily management system targets, coach operators, and apply 5S, Visual Control, and Lean practices in the veneer/wood products plant. You will drive standard work, teach operators via Job Instruction, and collaborate with maintenance to sustain safety and quality.

You will lead team meetings, promote lean improvements, and mentor staff while ensuring policy adherence and timely issue resolution.

Qualifications

  • Experience in wood products or manufacturing field preferred.
  • Understanding Lean Systems (The Columbia Way).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio and percent; draw and interpret graphs; calculate basic statistics and lean measures.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and groups at all levels.
  • Ability to supervise according to policies and laws.
  • Ability to interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; provide effective counseling; address complaints.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise part of the Daily Management System to meet hourly and shift targets, and develop countermeasures for variances.
  • Apply the 8 Wastes knowledge to the production process.
  • Enforce 5S and Visual Control at all workstations.
  • Own development and adherence to standard work.
  • Use Job Instruction techniques to train new and cross-trained operators.
  • Apply Job Relations to team member interactions.
  • Apply Job Methods to improve production tasks.
  • Use Performance Counseling to give specific feedback to team members.
  • Facilitate team meetings as necessary.
  • Ensure overall safety performance of production operators and maintenance technicians; promote STAR observations.
  • Promote and enforce quality standards and develop countermeasures when needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Collaborate with maintenance to resolve problems.
  • Communicate information to other Team Leaders and the VSM.
  • Apply A3 problem solving methods.
  • Other duties may be assigned and are inherent to the position.

Job description

  • A pply knowledge of the 8 Wastes to the production process.

  • Maintain integrity of confidential information, such as employee records and personal information, budgets, products,and processes.
  • Work with the maintenance department to resolveproblemsas necessary.

Physical Requirements: Work time is split between the office and the manufacturing plant, withmosttime spent in the plant.In the plant environment, the person is exposed to heat, cold, noise, dust, production equipment, and weather conditions. Frequent walking throughout the mill on various surfaces and up/down stairsand ladders; occasional climbing up/down ladders andpossibly on/offforklifts.Frequent use of hands for computer use, writing, and measuring. Occasional pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, carrying, and bending. Travel Requirements: Available to travel as needed – normally less than 10%of work time. Other Requirements: Areas of responsibility will be assigned asneeded, butgenerally willbe limited to production within the mill. These requirementsmayvary depending on which shift theTeam Leadis assigned.Work hours may vary as needed to accommodate meetings, weekend production, absences of other staff, etc.Work areas/assignments may vary or rotate to best meet the needs of the plant.

Qualifications/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Experience in wood products or manufacturingfieldpreferred.
  • Familiarity with the process for manufacturing hardwood veneer or plywood.
  • Understanding ofLean Systems(The Columbia Way).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to calculatebasicstatistics (ex: mode, mean) and lean measures (ex:takttime, cycle time).
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize andaccomplishmultiple tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and groups at all levels.
  • Ability to carry out supervisory responsibilitiesin accordance withthe organization's policies and applicable laws.
