Job summary

Neighborhood Learning Alliance seeks a part-time Teaching Assistant for the High School University program to support social workers and college professors in delivering Medical Terminology course materials and non-academic supports. The position is virtual with sessions twice weekly and occasional one-on-one coaching.

Under supervision, the TA will help design materials, review syllabi, assist with homework, and track student progress.

Qualifications

  • Subject matter proficiency in the college course of interest.
  • Strong verbal and written communication to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions, and deliver feedback.
  • Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance.
  • Ability to connect and interact with high school students.
  • Ability to take supervision and correction constructively.
  • Ability to positively supervise students.
  • Basic knowledge of database, excel spreadsheet, and word processing applications (Google platforms).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Have reliable transportation or able to access college campus.

  • Demonstrate academic competence in the subject area.
  • Review syllabus topics and assignments.
  • Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks.
  • Conduct practice tests to track progress, identify areas of improvement and help set goals for exam preparation.
  • Collaborate effectively with the university and the organization to increase student performance.
  • Provide students positive and constructive feedback.
  • Offer feedback on progress to students' parents and teachers where appropriate.
  • Maintain an orderly and organized learning environment and ensure that students are on-task.
  • Lead small groups of students in homework, essay writing and editing workshops, etc.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward student learning and teaching practice.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job description

Title: Teaching Assistant (TA),High School University (HSU) Program

Reports to: Social Worker, College and Career Readiness

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Employment Status: Part-time

  • August 24th - October 15th
  • Virtual Sessions: Monday & Wednesday, 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm

Hourly Rate: $16.00 up to 10 work hours per week

Courses: Medical Terminology

Work Location: Virtual

Training Dates: Week of August 24th, August 31st, September 7th

Offer Conditions: Hiring: Dependent on FBI, Child Abuse, Criminal Background, and mandated reporter training (The cost for clearances is covered by the organization)

Work Schedule: Group virtual sessions twice Monday & Wednesdays, occasional one-on-one, review and prep of tutoring

Program Overview

The High School University (HSU) program is designed to address systemic challenges for low-income students accessing college level courses and career work related experiences while in high school. The HSU programs provide high school students in the Pittsburgh region the opportunity to earn free college credits, participate in work related experiences, and receive college and career readiness support.

Under the supervision of the Social Worker, the Teaching Assistant works with the Social Workers and college Professor to design support materials and non-academic supports that will build student's academic understandings, skills, college readiness, and social-emotional intelligence. The course is in-person on the college campus (CCAC Boyce). Twice a week the Teaching Assistant will co-lead virtual small group sessions for the students.
