The YMCA of Pawtucket in Pawtucket, RI is seeking a part-time Teacher Assistant to support early childhood education. Under guidance of the Early Childhood Director/Ed Coordinator and Lead Teacher, you will assist in planning, preparing, and implementing curriculum aligned with RI standards.

This position will be part-time Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8:30-5:30, with the possibility of moving to full-time.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Teacher Assistant Certification or 9 college credits in Early Childhood Education.
  • Three months experience working in a classroom environment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age; ability to obtain CPR and First Aid within 3 months of hire.
  • Obtain or begin requirements to obtain the RI ELI/ RIELDS certificate within 9 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, preparing, and implementing the classroom curriculum using RI standards (RIELDS).
  • Maintain health and safety standards in the classroom and ensure cleanliness.
  • Greet families and children as they enter or exit the classroom and building.
  • Follow through with daily lesson plans in the Lead Teacher's absence.
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and Family Engagement activities.

POSITION SUMMARY:This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibilities. Under the guidance of the Early Childhood Director/ Ed Coordinator and the Lead Teacher, the main responsibilities of the Teacher Assistant are to assist in planning, preparing, and implementing the classroom curriculum using the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS).

This position will be part-time Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8:30-5:30, with the possibility of moving to full-time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist in establishing a warm and professional rapport with all children and families in the classroomAssist in maintaining health and safety standards in the classroom Maintain accurate attendance recordsEnsure cleanliness of the classroom including counter tops, sinks and tablesGreet families and children as they enter or exit the classroom and or buildingSupport social and emotional development and positive guidance in the classroomAssist in designing an appropriate room arrangement to support the goals of the age of the childrenAssist in the documentation of children’s workEnsure appropriate active supervision of children at all times of day (especially in the bathroom and on the playground)Follow through with the daily lesson plans in the absence of the Lead TeacherBe familiar with DHS licensing regulations, and Family HandbookParticipate in Family Engagement Activities run by the center Develop a yearly Professional Development Plan that is aligned to the RI Workforce Knowledge Competencies, which will include 20 hour of training in a related field.Participate in all staff trainings and parent/staff meetings and other mandatory or required meetings during the year.Complete the duties or provide coverage as assigned by the Ed Coordinator/Director of the program

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
