Job description

Our camp is growing and we need more counselors! BVF is hiring at least 2 additional counselors for part-time or full-time counselor! Hiring within 1 week!

Job Summary

THIS POSITION REQUIRES AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF EXPERIENCE TEACHING GROUPS OF CHILDREN (MUST HAVE TAUGHT AT LEAST ONE CLASS OF AT LEAST 12 CHILDREN). You will not succeed at this job without that experience.

Job Summary

Belle Vie Farm is seeking counselors to work with children ages 6-12 for our 2026/27 Teacher Workday Camps. We offer 2-10 camps per month during the school year.

About Belle Vie Farm

Belle Vie is a 34-acre farm located two miles from downtown Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We host child-directed farm, forest, and art programs year round. 25 acres of our property is forested, which not only provides ample shade for playtime, but also allows us to practice silvopasture: a form of pasturing animals in the forest. Near our forest play areas are pigs, goats, cows, chickens, and more!

Our mission is to create community by engaging people in regenerative agricultural and nature-based activities. Our vision is to be change-makers in environmental stewardship by thoughtfully and sustainably nurturing the soil, water, and natural resources through silvopastures and food forests, and by inspiring individuals to follow their own unique path to nature.

More details about our summer camp can be found at ------------.

Position Summary

The primary goal of a Belle Vie Counselor is to be a mentor to young minds and support the development of positive qualities through creativity, a ton of outdoor play, and fostering strong relationships. We aim to model the qualities we value the most: authenticity, compassion, wisdom, and courage. In all things we do — from animal care and gardening to artistic creations and forest adventures — our focus is centered on how we can help kids learn and practice these qualities.

During TWD camps, you will be leading or co-leading groups of 12 children ages 6-11 and sometimes a CIT (Counselor in Training) around our farm, forest, and art studio.

Our TWD camp staff arrive at 7:45am (we are 2 miles from UNC campus) and work until 3:30pm. Per diem pay is $160.

Priority is given to counselors who can work at least half of the TWD camps scheduled. This is preferred, but not required! If you are going to knock our socks off with your skill in working with children, we'll take as many days as you can give!

The right candidate for this position is someone who genuinely enjoys working with children and has lots of energy with a positive, playful spirit. They are excited about showing up for work each day, communicate effectively with the director and parents, are in excellent physical shape, and speak positively/respectfully about and with children, families, and other staff. We don't do “bossy” or grumpy here. We know everyone has their off days, but in general, we want to work with happy people!

Our programs are mostly outdoors (except in unsafe or extreme weather) and in our climate controlled maker studio and farm barn. Campers hike (a lot), run, play in the forest, build forts, make messes in the mud kitchen, and do lots of messy art. You will move your body most of the camp day and will hopefully get dirty! This is as far from a sit-and-look-at-your-phone job as you can get! Our standards are high because we are working with impressionable children who are looking up to you as role models!

Job Type: Part-time

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Guide campers during daily activities, ensuring a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Lead campers in scheduled activities with an attitude of interest, joy, and excitement. How a counselor leads has a direct effect on how campers perceive an activity!
  • Remain flexible and adaptable to changes in programming and scheduling
  • Manage behavior effectively by maintaning healthy boundaries with and between campers, helping campers self-regulate, and assisting them when they are distressed
  • Uphold our firm stance against bullying. Our camp does not allow bullying of any sort, and we take it very seriously. We send kids home when they are disrespectful and bullying. We don't expect you to absorb that kind of conduct.
  • Provide first aid when necessary, following safety protocols to address minor injuries or health concerns promptly.
  • Collaborate with co-counselors and staff to coordinate schedules, share responsibilities and ensure an upbeat, smooth camp day.
  • Parent communication about negative behavior takes place between the director and the parent, sometimes with a counselor joining if necessary. We do not expect you to handle challenging parent situations.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18+ and have attended at least one semester of college
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Prior experience working with children in a group setting is required.
  • Open mind about managing group and individual behavior. We require counselors to adopt our approach to managing camper behavior. We practice mindfulness and compassion with children but are also very firm in setting and maintaining boundaries with kids (and parents)
  • Comfort with child-directed learning approaches
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must have the ability to engage campers creatively and effectively; having a silly sense of humor helps!
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to motivate and inspire kids.
  • An upbeat attitude that recognizes most kids mean well and want to join in on group experiences.
  • The wisdom to recognize the difference between a camper having a hard time and a camper creating a hard time for others.

Our staff is fabulous at creating a super fun and exciting workplace. We don't take ourselves too seriously, but we do take the job seriously. If you're interested in a fun, adventurous, creative job, we'd love to talk with you!
