Poplar Springs Hospital in Petersburg, VA seeks a qualified Teacher for Private Day and Residential programs. You will deliver classroom instruction to students aged 5–18, with homeroom duties and detailed documentation for the facility and each student’s school system.

The role operates within a multi-disciplinary treatment team, following program guidelines and state education rules. Class sizes are 6–10, with focus on behavioral and educational growth.

Qualifications

• Virginia Provisional Teaching Certificate.
• Current certification in Special Education and endorsement in Emotional Disabilities AND Specific Learning Disabilities OR endorsement in Special Education General Education Curriculum K-12.
• Current CPR, First Aid and medication management certification (Dayschool only).
• Minimum four year degree; Master’s preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide classroom instruction with attendant documentation for facility and school records.
• Work within a multi-disciplinary treatment team.
• Homeroom responsibilities and referral development with school systems.
• Age groups: 5–12 for children or 13–18 for adolescents.

Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183 bed acute care and residential facility. For more than 30 years Poplar Springs Hospital has been guided by its mission of helping those who need the full continuum of behavioral health services. Our facility offers behavioral and psychological treatment for adults and adolescents through our acute programs, adolescent residential programs, as well as programs for active duty military. Poplar Springs Hospital is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina. Situated on 25 acres, our serene, nature-like setting offers our patients a sense of calm and peace. We have a new opening for a Full Time Teacher -Private Day and Residential. The teacher participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team in provision on educational instruction to students. The Teacher will provide classroom instruction with attendant documentation for both the facility record and for each student’s school system. Operates under the guidelines of the program, regulatory agencies and the State Board of Education. In most instances, class size is 6-10 students of ages 5 to 12 (Children) or 13 to 18 (Adolescents), however the Teacher also has Homeroom responsibilities. Position duties include Referral Development activities and contact with school systems. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Position Requirements

• Virginia Provisional Teaching Certificate.


• Current certification in Special Education and endorsement in Emotional Disabilities AND Specific Learning Disabilities OR endorsement in Special Education General Education Curriculum K-12 required.


• Current certification in CPR, HWC and First Aid


• Current certification in medication management (Dayschool only).

Education/Experience

• Minimum four year degree


• Master’s degree preferred


• Demonstrated teaching ability in an inpatient psychiatric setting


• Demonstrated ability to work with adolescents 11 to 17 years of age

General Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services.


• Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.


• Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.


• Basic clerical skills, basic experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.)


• Experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)


• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.


• Ability to problem solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions.


• Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning.
