Job Description

Under the supervision of the principal, the Reading Specialist plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school‑related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and the community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional literacy plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Create a classroom environment that provides student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives
• Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students including students with disabilities
• Prepare, write, and implement lesson plans that provide targeted instruction that meets the needs of each student
• Administer quarterly and ongoing assessments to determine students’ progress and appropriate next steps in instruction
• Develop a system to document and maintain data on student progress

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.

Knowledge of the Science of Reading and Virginia Literacy Act

Experience in the use and analysis of variety of literacy assessment tools

10 month contract (200 days)
