Job description

Teacher Homebound Instructor

FLSA Designation: Exempt; $34.00 per hour, 10 months. Part‑time, grant funded position with no benefits. Requires availability both during and after school hours.

Position Summary

This virtual position is accountable for ensuring that homebound children in the District identified as capable of benefiting from instruction receive an ongoing educational program.

Responsibilities
  • Acquire personal acquaintanceship with the student’s parents or guardians and establish a cooperative relationship based on the student’s individual needs.
  • Assume responsibility for obtaining textbooks and other teaching materials necessary through established procedures.
  • Devise instructional programs for each assigned student, permanently or temporarily, with guidance from curriculum specialists and the student’s regular teacher(s).
  • File written progress reports for each assigned student with the parents or guardians, and for temporarily assigned students, with their regular teacher(s).
  • Interpret the instructional program for homebound students to regular District staff and the community as required.
  • Stay informed of trends and new methods in education and consider how they may be adapted to homebound instruction.
  • Maintain and file reports and records as required by the special services director, including attendance reports and case evaluations.
  • Meet with each assigned student daily to provide instruction.
  • Work with special services and pupil personnel teams to identify the educational needs and the physical and learning capabilities of students.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Valid Connecticut Teacher Certification and teaching certificate/endorsement(s) appropriate to the teaching assignment.
  • Conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement(s).
  • Optional possession of a current Motor Vehicle operator’s license.
  • Completion of all State Continuing Education Unit requirements for re‑certification.
  • Strong knowledge of core curriculum areas relevant to instruction, including reading, mathematics, science, business, music, art, languages, etc.
  • Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and current best practices.
  • Knowledge of child development, classroom management techniques, instructional technologies, learner outcomes, learning theory, multiple intelligences, and multicultural, gender and disability fair curriculum concepts.
  • Understanding of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI).
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability and flexibility to interact effectively with students, parents, staff, administration, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse student populations.
  • Ability to plan and implement lesson plans based on District and school goals, and the objectives, needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to provide appropriate instruction in core subjects.
  • Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative learning environment and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Working Conditions

Employees must have adequate physical strength, stamina, and visual and auditory acuity and maintain such fitness as required. Physical examination may be required.
