Job summary

Payette School District in Idaho is seeking an English Learner Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The EL Teacher provides instruction and support to students developing proficiency in English, planning language development to strengthen listening, speaking, reading and writing, enabling participation in academic classes.

The role requires Idaho teaching certification with an EL endorsement, and experience with English Learners and secondary students.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate instructional strategies, scaffolds, and supports to make learning accessible to English Learners.
  • Differentiate instruction for students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Adjust instruction based on student needs and progress.
  • Support students in applying English language skills in their general education classes.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support ELs in their academic classes.
  • Provide teachers with information and strategies to support students at different English proficiency levels.
  • Communicate with families regarding student needs, progress, and available supports.
  • Work collaboratively with administrators, counselors, special education staff, and other school personnel as needed.
  • Help create a welcoming and supportive environment for English Learners and their families.
  • Provide instructional direction to paraprofessionals working with English Learners.
  • Provide lessons, materials, and expectations for instruction delivered by paraprofessionals.
  • Communicate regularly with paraprofessionals regarding student progress and instructional needs.
  • Monitor instruction and provide guidance to ensure services are consistent with teacher expectations.
  • Serve as the certified teacher responsible for instruction provided with paraprofessional support.

English Learner Teacher

JOB SUMMARY

The English Learner (EL) Teacher provides instruction and support to students who are developing proficiency in English. The teacher plans and delivers English language development instruction designed to strengthen students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and support their successful participation in academic classes.

The EL Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, families, and other staff to identify student needs, provide appropriate language supports, monitor student progress, and promote the academic success of English Learners.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Idaho teaching certificate appropriate for the assignment.
  • Appropriate English Learner/English as a New Language endorsement or ability to meet applicable Idaho certification requirements for the assignment.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices for students developing English proficiency.
  • Ability to plan and deliver differentiated instruction for students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Ability to use student assessment information to plan instruction and monitor progress.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, students, and families.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching or supporting English Learners.
  • Training or experience in English language development instruction.
  • Experience working with secondary students
  • Experience administering English language proficiency assessments.
  • Knowledge of strategies for integrating language development with academic content.

Speaking a language other than English is not required.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction

  • Provide English language development instruction to individual students and small groups.
  • Plan and deliver instruction based on students' English proficiency levels and academic needs.
  • Develop students' English listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and academic language skills.
  • Use appropriate instructional strategies, scaffolds, and supports to make learning accessible to English Learners.
  • Differentiate instruction for students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Adjust instruction based on student needs and progress.
  • Support students in applying English language skills in their general education classes.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support English Learners in their academic classes.
  • Provide teachers with information and strategies to support students at different English proficiency levels.
  • Communicate with families regarding student needs, progress, and available supports.
  • Work collaboratively with administrators, counselors, special education staff, and other school personnel as needed.
  • Help create a welcoming and supportive environment for English Learners and their families.

Oversight of Paraprofessionals

  • Provide instructional direction to paraprofessionals working with English Learners.
  • Provide lessons, materials, and expectations for instruction delivered by paraprofessionals.
  • Communicate regularly with paraprofessionals regarding student progress and instructional needs.
  • Monitor instruction and provide guidance to ensure services are consistent with teacher expectations.
  • Serve as the certified teacher responsible for instruction provided with paraprofessional support.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and other assigned District activities.
  • Maintain accurate student records and required documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
  • Follow District policies, procedures, curriculum, and instructional expectations.
  • Maintain appropriate certification and professional qualifications.
  • Communicate and conduct oneself professionally with students, families, colleagues, and community members.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned.

Student Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Assist with the identification and placement of students eligible for English Learner services.
  • Administer required English language proficiency assessments.
  • Monitor student language development and academic progress.
  • Use assessment information to identify student needs and guide instruction.
  • Maintain required student records and documentation.
  • Assist with decisions regarding continued EL services and student exit from the program.

COMPENSATION

Salary based on experience and skills. Position qualifies for benefits which include health, dental, vision and life insurance; PERSI retirement, as well as access to optional ancillary insurance and retirement products.
