The Role
The Early Head Start Teacher develops and implements individual and group educational plans for infants and toddlers, designed to promote social‑emotional, physical, and cognitive growth appropriate to their stage of development. In each Early Head Start classroom, two Early Head Start Teachers work together to lead child development activities with support from Program Aides and Volunteers. In collaboration with a co‑Teacher you will manage day‑to‑day operations, verify legal compliance, build partnerships with families, and ensure program quality. You report to the Center Director or Manager of Education & Inclusion. As a frontline representative of Save the Children you are required to ensure safety and security of children and families, adhering to the agency’s values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity and Integrity.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
- Develop and implement individualized and group lesson plans that promote all developmental areas, preparing children for preschool.
- Guide and facilitate activities, including daily classroom activities and field trips.
- Select and set up equipment and materials to maintain a safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment.
- Practice responsive caregiving to promote relational learning; include routine integration in a flexible schedule.
- Plan and conduct conferences (minimum 2) and home visits (minimum 2) to keep parents informed on child progress and help them develop observational skills.
- Maintain accurate records both on paper and in designated online systems.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
- Conduct observations, assessments, and screenings; maintain a comprehensive portfolio for each child with weekly observations, work samples, and developmental assessments.
- Support Program Aides and Volunteers in developing their classroom activity skills.
- Implement active supervision to ensure no child is left unsupervised.
- Use the playground as an extension of the classroom and maintain its safety.
- Assist children during mealtime and teach social, self‑help, and nutritional skills.
- Assist children with personal habits such as resting, brushing teeth, diapering, and toilet habits.
- Engage parents in children’s education through classroom involvement and home activities.
- Create an annual inventory of all classroom equipment and supplies.
- Collaborate with the Manager of Education & Inclusion to develop and document professional development plans.
- Keep the classroom clean and organized.
- Mobilize and document matching‑in‑kind activities, goods and services.
- Be available for extended hours to ensure all children are picked up by parents or legal guardians.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a CDA or an associate degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field with coursework equivalent to a major in early childhood education, plus experience teaching preschool‑age children.
- Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Strong communication, collaboration and organizational skills; excellent problem‑solving and time‑management.
- Ability to follow established directions and take initiative.
- Knowledge of the purpose of the Head Start/Early Head Start program.
- Sensitive relational ability with children.
- Strict confidentiality of all required information.
- Participation in professional development training, including basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification as required by state licensing and HSPPS.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish or English and other languages used by children and families).
- If in North Carolina, holding Birth‑Kindergarten (B‑K) Licensure preferred.
Additional Qualifications
- Physical requirements: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and to 5‑10 pounds constantly; include sitting, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive action, keyboarding, and computer use.
- Clear pre‑employment background checks – including local, state, and national criminal records, sex offender registries, employment and education verifications, and child‑abuse registry checks where required.
- Incumbent may be required to operate a motor vehicle; must maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with Save the Children vehicle policies.
- Current and former Head Start/Early Head Start parents will receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified.
