Job Summary
Assists the Teacher I and Teacher II in providing a positive learning environment and varied experiences which will help children develop socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development toward the overall goal of social competence and school readiness. Also, assistance in other areas of the school or in transportation services.
Essential Responsibilities
- Check and respond to emails daily.
- Clocking in/out as scheduled on electronic system.
- Meet all deadlines set in place.
- Assists the Teacher I and Teacher II to meet and maintain CLASS scores that coincide with performance rating categories for parish, program site, and state scores as well as meets Head Start standards.
- Makes and carries out written yearly and daily activity plans with Teacher I and Teacher II to provide developmentally appropriate educational experiences that utilize all program curriculum resources: i.e. Conscious Discipline, Frog Street Curriculum, Heggerty, Handwriting Without Tears, Eureka Math, Teaching Strategies Gold – in the areas of art, music, language, dramatic play, science, social/emotional, language, cognitive, and gross/fine motor. Other programs may be added at any time to meet state and federal requirements.
- Assists Teacher I and Teacher II in planning and utilizing all educational materials, supplies, and equipment to provide child development and growth regarding school readiness/ongoing observations and assessments (Frog Street/Teaching Strategies Gold) and shares this information with parents.
- Works one-on-one with children as needed.
- Assists with maintaining a clean and safe learning environment both indoors and outdoors to meet all mandates ensuring that toys and materials are sanitized properly and are submerged in water and sanitizing solution. Properly store all cleaning/hazardous solutions/materials. Morning and evening inspections are conducted daily, before children arrive and after children dismiss.
- Assists Teacher I and Teacher II in completing ongoing observations, necessary documentation (pictures, videos, or typed descriptions), finalizes three checkpoints per year, and completes professional development throughout the school year with Teaching Strategies Gold.
- Follows and implements program behavior management system on all children in the classroom along with Teacher I and Teacher II.
- Assists Teacher I and Teacher II with creating and maintaining yearly child portfolio with an adequate amount of documentation; i.e. work samples, art work, hand writing, etc.
- Works and communicates effectively with assigned Teacher I and Teacher Assistants.
- Establishes a positive working relationship with parents, staff, and volunteers.
- Assists with maintaining all necessary documentation within the classroom i.e. sign-in-logs, daily logs, incident/accident reports, provider logs, medication logs, etc.
- Maintains knowledge and an understanding of program rules and regulations including LDOE, BOH, Fire Marshal, and Head Start regulations.
- Eats meals with the children daily and encourages the development of good nutritional habits. Help children learn about good healthy oral/hygiene habits, handwashing, and tooth brushing daily.
- Reports facility concerns to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Attends Teacher Meet & Greet Day, Summer Brigance Screenings, Pre-K Graduations, and any other after-hours program event (if/when mandatory).
- Assists on school buses in the role of a Bus Monitor and as a Food Service Technician when assigned.
- Attends in-service and pre-service training programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisors.
- Ensures absolute confidentiality with respect to information and records concerning children and staff.
Peripheral Duties
- Attends all professional development related to Louisiana Licensing Regulations and Head Start.
- Site/Location assignment is subject to change based on the needs of the program.
- Serves as necessary at school sites.
- NOTE: All parish government employees in a declared emergency shall be considered essential personnel.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school graduate or GED equivalent;
- College degree preferred and paid accordingly.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of appropriate early childhood practices;
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other agencies, program participants, and the general public;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Ability to coordinate activities;
- Ability to attend classes to obtain CDA;
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
Special Requirements
- A valid Louisiana Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one. A valid Louisiana Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
Tools and Equipment Used
- Computer skills including ChildPlus, Microsoft Office, copy machine, iPad, telephone, laminating machine, automobile, etc.
Physical Demands

- The employee is required to lift and carry 25 pounds or more during the working day.
