Responsibilities
- Provide direct instructional support to students under the general supervision of a certified teacher.
- Work as a member of a classroom team with the teacher retaining ultimate responsibility for developing and planning the educational program.
- Demonstrate the ability to assume teacher responsibilities as needed.
- Perform assigned duties according to the policies, rules, and regulations of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and the New York State Department of Education. Comply with all Federal mandates as they apply to students with disabilities.
- Provide close supervision and take all reasonable precautions to ensure student safety.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication.
- Assist in instruction and fulfillment of IEP mandates.
- Establish a structured learning environment that fosters a positive self-concept and sense of well-being. Use strategies that motivate students to develop problem solving and reasoning skills.
- Set high standards and expectations for academic performance and responsible behavior.
- Assist the teacher in documenting student progress and maintain regular communication with appropriate classroom teachers to support identified goals and objectives.
- Provide positive feedback to encourage personal responsibility for educational activities and interpersonal relationships.
- Assist in helping students develop positive work behavior and attitudes.
- Ensure the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Promote proper care of school property, equipment, textbooks, supplies, and other materials; maintain inventory and account for resources within the assigned classroom(s).
- Assist the teacher in maintaining standards for student conduct and enforcing discipline according to policy and due process rights; motivate students toward appropriate goals and provide positive reinforcement.
- Assist in preparation of the classroom at the beginning of the year, inventory equipment and supplies, and store them at the end of the year.
- Participate in faculty meetings and in-service training.
- Display ethical and professional behavior when working with students, parents, school personnel, and other agencies associated with the school.
Term of Employment and Salary
Term of Employment: 10-month position
Salary: Starting at $26,000 as per UBTA salary schedule/contract
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel as defined in the teacher's negotiated agreement with input from the teacher of the classroom to which the employee is assigned.
