Job summary

Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System is seeking a Para Professional Aide to support teachers and students in educational and behavioral programs, helping students reach their fullest potential while rebuilding self-esteem. The role emphasizes assisting in classroom management, collaborating with the teacher, and maintaining student Behavior Charts.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED (Bachelor’s degree preferred) and a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Knowledge of educational, child development and classroom teaching/management theories with a good understanding of educational and therapeutic interventions is preferred.
• Must have valid Illinois driver’s license with no suspensions or tickets for major violations for at least 3 years.

Responsibilities

• Assist in classroom by following teacher’s lead and supporting student engagement.
• Move around classroom to facilitate learning and maintain safety.
• Follow behavior management plans and collaborate with teacher and principal on student needs.
• Prepare and maintain student Behavior Charts daily and quarterly with teacher collaboration.
• Assist in grading objective homework and instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
• Utilize crisis intervention and de-escalation skills to maintain a safe environment for students and staff.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Principal, the Para Professional Aide provides students with educational and behavioral programs that will enable them to reach their fullest educational potential, while rebuilding their self-esteem.

Assist teacher in the academic process that includes assisting in management of the classroom environment under the teacher’s leadership. Acts as a positive role model for students.

Essential Functions

• Actively moves around classroom to facilitate student’s learning.
• Communicates effectively with teacher.
• Available to all students by physical proximity as well as by visual contact.
• Encourages continued student engagement without disrupting classroom instructions
• Encourages students to make choices appropriate to classroom and school environment.
• Demonstrates ability to manage student behavior during instructional interaction.
• Develops awareness of each student’s special needs.
• Demonstrates consistent awareness for each student’s safety and whereabouts.
• Assists in maintaining required behavior management plans.
• Works in collaboration with teacher and principal regarding school projects and students needs.
• Prepare and maintain each student’s Behavior Charts on a daily and quarterly basis in collaboration with the teacher.
• Assist in the grading of objective homework assignments as directed by the teacher.
• Assist in the instructional process as directed by the teacher.
• Assist in the duplication of instructional material as directed by the classroom teacher.
• Utilizes knowledge and skills related to crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation in order to provide a safe environment for students, visitors and staff.
