Job summary

Westchester School For Special Chil is seeking a Teaching Assistant to support the classroom teacher with daily routines and activities. The role requires working with developmentally disabled children in an educational setting and supervising groups when needed.

Potential candidate will pursue NY TA certification and maintain it through ongoing professional development every five years. Experience with special needs students is preferred but not mandatory.

Qualifications

• Hold at least a high school diploma and be eligible for NY Level One TA Certificate.
• Candidate should pursue Teaching Assistant Certification ASAP if not held.
• Evidence of certification progression may be requested.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct assistance to the classroom teacher in daily routines.
• Supervise a classroom group in the absence of the teacher and follow lesson plans.
• Assist with routines including toileting, playground, lunch, and arrival/departure.
• Respond promptly to emergencies and assist with safety.
• May perform additional duties as assigned.

EducationThe qualified applicant will hold at least a high school diploma and have or be eligible for a New York State Level One (1) Teaching Assistant Certificate. It is expected that candidate will pursue Teaching Assistant Certification as soon as possible if the candidate does not hold such certificate and will show evidence of this upon request. The candidate will be expected to achieve Level Three (3) Teaching Assistant Certification, which must be maintained with Professional Development every five (5) years through New York State Education Department.ExperiencePrior experience with developmentally disabled children in an educational or recreational setting is preferred but not required. Such assignments would be made in cooperation with the daily classroom and individual schedules and with the acceptance of the Teaching Assistant.
