Job summary

St. Mary's School for the Deaf in Buffalo, NY seeks an Educational Assistant to support classroom management, materials development and student activities.

You will assist students individually and in small groups with homework and projects, including daily tasks for multiply handicapped students, under the direction of the teacher. The role requires high school graduation with at least 6 college credits and NYS Teacher Assistant certification, plus experience with deaf students and students

Qualifications

• High school diploma and at least 6 hours of college coursework.
• Must have NYS Teacher Assistant certification.
• Experience with deaf students in an educational setting and with students with special needs (autism, intellectual and/or emotional disabilities).
• Ability to complete SLPI or willingness to train toward SLPI as defined by SMSD.

Responsibilities

• Assist in classroom management, materials development, activities, and duties.
• Assist students individually or in small groups with homework and projects.
• Support daily activities for multiply handicapped students (lifting, toileting, diaper changes).
• Assist in behavior management under the teacher's direction and discuss changes.
• Help with cafeteria and bus duty responsibilities.
• Prepare teaching materials (copying, gathering information, word processing, etc.).
• Ensure school and safety rules are followed by students in/out of classroom.
• accompany students to Speech, Music, Art, PE and other activities outside class; accompany on extended learning activities as directed.
• May substitute as classroom teacher when needed; intervene in emergencies as necessary.
• Attend mandatory departmental and staff meetings; perform other duties as assigned.

NOTE: The school may also require employees in this classification to complete successful training in behavior management programs including but not limited to TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) training will be provided by St. Mary's School for the Deaf.

Major Responsibilities

• Assist in classroom management, teaching materials development, educational activities, and special duties as assigned.
• Assist in the classroom under the Direction of the Teacher by assisting students individually and in small groups with homework, projects, etc.
• May assist students with physical day-to-day activities including lifting multiply handicapped students to and from wheelchairs, toileting and changing diapers.
• Assist in behavior management (as prescribed for each student) and discuss problems or changes with Teacher.
• Assists with cafeteria and bus duty activities.
• Assists in the preparation of teaching materials, which may include but is not limited to copying, gathering information, word processing, collating, pasting, and cutting materials.
• Assists Teacher to ensure that school and safety rules are followed by students in and out of the classroom.
• Accompanies students to Speech, Music, Art, Physical Education, and other activities that occur outside the classroom.
• Accompanies students to outside campus for extended learning activities as directed by the department of education.
• Capacity to substitute as a classroom teacher, when needed.
• Intercedes in emergency situations as needed and necessary.
• Attend departmental and staff mandatory meetings or other contractual or required by the school.
• Perform other duties as assigned or as needed by the classroom teacher or supervisor.
