Responsibilities

  • Assist the instructor in implementing classroom procedures, including preparing materials, progress monitoring, grading, and monitoring students.
  • Implement de-escalation techniques and physical intervention, as needed, in line with safe crisis management practices.
  • Maintain discipline and manage classroom routines and procedures.
  • Communicate and collaborate with colleagues and students to meet student needs.
  • Prepare lessons, units, and projects to meet learning objectives and monitor student progress.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to diverse learning styles.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and career paths.
  • Create, assign, and grade assessments (tests, quizzes, essays, projects).
  • Provide one-on-one support to students needing extra help or attention.
  • Give constructive feedback to support academic growth.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment encouraging participation.
  • Participate in professional development, workshops, and trainings to enhance teaching skills.
  • Attend faculty meetings and school events as assigned.
  • Maintain communication with students, parents, and staff; provide progress updates.
  • Assist with attendance, record-keeping, and organization of student files.
  • Order educational supplies for the Corrections program.
  • Support personal, social, and intellectual development of students.

Job description

The Tuscarora Intermediate Unit invites applications for a Teacher Apprentice for Correctional Education Facilities, located at South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit. The Teacher Apprentice for Correctional Education Facilities shall be directly responsible to the facility Principal or his/her designee for supervision and evaluation.

  • Act 34 Pennsylvania Criminal History Clearance
  • Act 151 Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 114 Federal Criminal History Clearance

Fundamental Duties/Essential Functions
  • Assists the instructor in implementing classroom procedures: Including preparing material, progress monitoring, grading, and monitoring students.
  • Implement de-escalation techniques and physical intervention, in accordance with safe crisis management competencies when necessary.
  • Support in maintaining discipline and managing classroom routines and procedures.
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with co-workers and students to meet student needs.
  • Prepare lessons, units and projects to complete clear learning objectives and monitor student completion.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of students.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and career paths.
  • Create, assign and grade various assessments for students, including tests, quizzes, essays and projects.
  • Work with students one-on-one when they need extra help or attention.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and participation.
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and training sessions to enhance teaching skills and stay updated with current educational practices.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, parents, and other staff members.
  • Provide feedback to the other teachers on student progress, challenges, and achievements.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as attendance recording, record-keeping, progress monitoring, and organizing student files.
  • Order educational supplies and materials for the Corrections program.
  • Assist in facilitating the personal, social, and intellectual development of students.
