Job description

The Teacher Aide works cooperatively with the Teacher in planning, preparing, and implementing all classroom activities and field trips. The role facilitates parent engagement through conferences, home visits, and attendance at parent meetings, and encourages classroom volunteer participation.

Position Summary

The Teacher Aide assists in planning and preparing classroom activities and field trips, records observations of children, and helps the Teacher implement programs to meet children’s physical, social, emotional, and educational needs. The Aide also prepares and supervises nutritious meals and snacks as required, shares in maintenance of the center, serves as bus monitor per licensing requirements, completes programmatic and agency reports, and assists with home visits, on‑site visits, and parent conferences.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Teacher in planning and preparing all classroom activities and field trips.
  • Record observations of children and help the Teacher plan and implement programs that meet children’s physical, social, emotional, and educational needs.
  • Support the use of outcome reports and IEPs in classroom planning.
  • Prepare and supervise nutritious meals and snacks.
  • Maintain the center, equipment, and supplies.
  • Serve as bus monitor as required by licensing.
  • Complete programmatic and agency reports.
  • Assist with home visits, on‑site visits, and parent conferences; develop individual plans for children based on screenings and observations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • Less than one year of experience working with children in a child‑care setting.
  • Classroom experience in early childhood education.
  • Planning for individual needs.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer software.
  • Ability to communicate and relate to young children and work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to read, analyze, comprehend, and apply written procedures.
Education and Knowledge Requirements
  • Current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and in process of attaining a college degree.
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards (preferred).
  • Knowledge of child‑care license regulations.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Must pass required background checks.
  • Must hold current C.H.R.C. credential.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance.

Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to use hands, reach, talk, and hear; stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, taste, or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must arrange classroom equipment, lift and move furniture, and sit in small chairs or on the floor for extended periods. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a classroom setting with frequent exposure to outside weather conditions. Occasional local travel may be required, sometimes in inclement weather. There may be occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other bodily fluids.
