Job summary

Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES is seeking a Teacher Aide (BEC) to support students in Special Education programs across the region. This hands-on position offers meaningful daily interaction, helping teachers manage classrooms and support individual student needs.

The role runs 6 hours per day, with a 10-month school calendar and options for summer work. Pay ranges from $16.00 to $18.72 per hour, with comprehensive benefits including health insurance, NYS retirement, loan forgiveness, and discounts.

Qualifications

  • Civil Service eligibility for Teacher Aide required and a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team to support students in program assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher by performing non-instructional duties to support students with disabilities individually, in small groups and/or test proctoring.
  • Assist with general supervision of students in various settings including classroom, hallways, lunchroom, and playground.
  • Implement behavior plans and safety interventions under staff direction and assist with crisis de-escalation as needed.
  • Prepare classroom materials, projects, demonstrations and displays; support IEPs and 504 plans under certified staff guidance.
  • Attend meetings and participate in ongoing professional development.

Job Description

Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES is hiring Teacher Aides to support students across our Special Education programs throughout the region. This is meaningful, hands-on work where your presence truly matters every single day.

Work Schedule & Benefits
  • 6 hours per day
  • 10-month position following the school calendar (evenings, holidays, and summers off!) with the option to work during summer school

What You’ll Do
  • Assist the classroom teacher by performing non-instructional duties to support students with disabilities individually, in small groups and/or test proctoring.
  • Assist with general supervision of students in a multitude of settings including, but not limited to classroom, hallways, lunchroom, and playground.
  • Assist with classroom management of students and monitoring individual student behavior through crisis intervention by implementing positive behavior management strategies or others supported by the program.
  • Perform physical intervention techniques (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) when necessary.
  • Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and safety plans under staff direction
  • Support de-escalation and prevention strategies, and respond to student crises as requested.
  • Assist with the preparation of classroom materials, projects, demonstrations and displays.
  • Support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans under the direction of certified staff
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA
  • Utilize your own special skills and abilities by assisting the instructional program in such areas as foreign language, arts, crafts, music, recreation, vocational or other similar subject areas when requested/appropriate.
  • Ride the school bus with students and support students in community-based learning activities (work experience, field trips, vocational training).
  • Assist in self-help, personal care activities, including toileting, and mobility for students with disabilities.
  • Willing to continue ongoing professional development in support of program placement.
  • Perform other duties related to specific programs.
  • Complete required training as assigned, including TCI-S
  • Attend meetings, as necessary.
Job Qualifications
  • Civil Service eligibility for Teacher Aide required: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma
  • Work collaboratively with team members to effectively support all students in program assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate with adults and students.
  • Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation) including, but not limited to:
    • Performing physical intervention techniques,
    • Lifting/carrying/moving up to 50 lbs,
    • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and/or reaching.
    • Supporting/transporting students in wheelchairs and/or providing assistance with transfer, ambulation and positioning.
    • Escorting and/or walking with (in some cases running after) students in multiple settings such as in community based activities, nature walks and school buildings.
  • Fingerprinting and background check required (per NYS Law)
