Job summary

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is seeking a PHP Educator to provide educational services for school-age residents, including assessment, instruction, IEP/IIP writing, and transition planning. The role supports a highly structured residential program for youths.

You will collaborate with therapists and educators, maintain documentation and participate in ongoing professional development to ensure adherence to state and facility standards. The position is based in Newport News, VA.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent.
  • Current Virginia teaching license in content specific area required.
  • At least three years of experience in a classroom environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides developmentally appropriate classroom instruction to assigned students according to IEP/IIP goals and objectives.
  • Implements the Behavior Management Plan to assess and document students’ behavior progress and adjust strategies.
  • Assess students’ academic achievement and document progress to adjust instructional planning.
  • Maintains communication with staff, parents/guardians, and local education agencies; update IEPs/IIP’s.
  • Participates in professional development activities and on-site training.

(PHP) Partial Hospitalization Program Teacher

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Newport News has an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Position Summary

The PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) Educator provides educational services to all school age children attending Newport News Behavioral Health Center– according to the facility standards as well as State and Federal regulations. Educational services include assessment, instruction, classroom management, documentation, consultation, IEP/IIP writing, transition planning, program development, curriculum writing and resident supervision.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides developmentally appropriate classroom instruction to assigned students according to IEP/IIP goals and objectives, student strengths and learning preferences, research-supported methods and techniques, and Newport News Behavioral Health Center recommended practices.
  • Implements the Behavior Management Plan at Newport News Behavioral Health Center, to assess and document students’ behavior progress (or lack of progress), to adjust behavioral strategies as needed and in consultation with the treatment team in order to maximize students’ behavioral success.
  • Assess students’ academic achievement continually through a variety of methods, to document progress (or lack of progress), and to adjust instructional planning as needed to maximize student achievement.
  • Maintains consistent communication with other staff at the facility, including parent(s)/guardians, and local education agencies by consulting with team members, attending meetings, keeping accurate records, completing assigned reports, making phone calls, writing letters and updating IEP’s/IIP’s.
  • Participates in professional development activities including on-site training and relevant off-site classes, workshops, etc.
  • Displays a high degree of professionalism in all activities and interactions with students, staff, parents, agency personnel, community members, etc.

Position Qualifications
