Job description

Shift Days vary; 8:30am–5pm. Scheduled Weekly Hours40.

Position Purpose

Responsible for planning and implementing the daily program, maintaining quality care for children within an assigned age group, promoting social, physical and intellectual growth of the children under his/her care, demonstrating appropriate discipline skills, maintaining classroom records, cleanliness and safety, and keeping parents informed of the progress of their child on a daily basis, consulting with the Center Director.

Essential Functions
  • Plan individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, and motor skills, such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others, and using play equipment.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment consistent with the center’s philosophy and goals.
  • Evaluate and react quickly with sound judgment and problem‑solving skills in complex and critical situations such as injuries and accidents.
  • Receive and respond to telephone inquiries with excellent communication skills.
  • Observe records and report to the Director any significant individual or group behavior that may affect the children.
  • Instruct children in personal cleanliness and self‑care practices.
  • Alternate periods of strenuous activity with periods of rest or light activity to avoid overstimulation and fatigue.
  • Help children develop habits of caring for their own clothing and picking up and putting away toys and books.
  • Prepare all daily records for attendance and food programs.
  • Immediately notify the Director of needed repairs to room, building, equipment and/or toys.
  • Serve meals and refreshments to children.
Specialized Knowledge & Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree or higher from an accredited college or university, or at least 6 semester hours in courses directly related to child care and/or child development from birth to age six.
  • Minimum of one year of directly related experience working with children under six years of age.
  • Must obtain Adult, Child,&Infant CPR, and First Aid at hire or within 30days of hire.
  • Must obtain Food Handlers class, SIDS, SBS, Mandated Reporter class at hire or within 30days of hire.
  • Must obtain Illinois Gateways Membership at hire or within 30days of hire.
  • Must apply for credentials through INCCRRA at hire or within 90days of hire.
  • Must obtain Introduction to Environmental Rating Scale class within the first year of hire.
  • Maintain thirty (30) clock hours of job‑related continuing education in the first year of employment and at least twenty‑four (24) clock hours each year thereafter.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age‑related needs of the children served on the assigned unit.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served.
  • Assess and interpret data about the child’s status to identify each child’s needs and provide appropriate care, including age‑related care, needed by the pediatric patient group.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation Range: $16.50–$24.75 per hour.
