Harris County Juvenile Probation Department seeks a full-time teacher to impact student growth in a structured classroom setting. The role focuses on delivering engaging STAAR-aligned instruction across multiple grades and subjects while fostering a supportive, therapeutic learning environment.
The position requires a valid Texas teaching certification and a willingness to work with at-risk youth, with regular hours 7:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Monday through Friday in a school setting.
Harris County Juvenile Probation Department is committed to the protection of the public, utilizing intervention strategies that are community-based, family-oriented, and least restrictive while emphasising responsibility and accountability of both parent and child. Under the authority of the Juvenile Board, the Educational Services Division offers educational programs for expelled students, delinquent youth in county-operated juvenile institutions, and students on probation seeking alternatives to traditional high school settings. The Juvenile Probation Department oversees all programs of Excel Academy Charter School, the Excel Academy Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program, and The Opportunity Center. All youth placed by the courts in Harris County juvenile detention and residential facilities receive educational services through the comprehensive academic program of Excel Academy Charter School. This program is funded by the Texas Education Agency, along with state and federal grants. Excel Academy Charter School offers both a regular school year program and a summer school program to help students continuously enhance their educational skills. The charter school emphasises core academic curriculum, STAAR remediation, vocational education, and life skills. It also includes The Opportunity Center campus, which provides alternative education opportunities for currently and previously system-involved young people who seek an alternative to traditional high school.
The staff of the Education Services Division believes that every child is a unique and special individual capable of learning. Our responsibility is to serve as facilitators, nurturing and developing each child's maximum academic, physical, social, and emotional potential. We are dedicated to providing opportunities that help students make self-directed, realistic, and responsible decisions in our multicultural, ever-changing world. Ultimately, students will benefit from their own efforts. Open and frequent communication among teachers, parents, guardians, and administrators is essential for increasing academic success.
As a teacher, you will have the extraordinary opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of your students and contribute to shaping their future. This role is focused on student growth and achievement. Your primary objective is to facilitate a dynamic and engaging learning environment that maximises student potential in intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. You will be responsible for managing multiple courses during each class period, ensuring that students perform at their best while fostering a supportive therapeutic environment.
This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.
