Job description

SailFuture’s mission to provide comprehensive, effective, continuous services to teenage foster youth in crisis to help them stabilize, gain an increased sense of self-worth, and engage in healthy relationships. Traditionally, foster youth have multiple people who cycle in and out of their lives, creating constant instability. Our goal is to provide a continuum of care to foster youth between the ages of 14-22 through an integrated approach that includes multiple treatment options. We’ve created a model unique to our sector that manages all facets of foster care under one organization—housing, education, case management, and therapy. In addition, we provide challenging, rite-of-passage sailing experiences both domestically and internationally to forge meaningful relationships between staff and youth. Upon completion of our program, our youth will have stable housing, a high school diploma/GED and plan for continuing education, connection to community, job skills, an expanded worldview, and renewed self-confidence.

Job Description

SailFuture’s teacher should be a passionate educator committed to the academic, spiritual, and emotional growth of their students. This person should be familiar with the unique emotional and academic challenges of youth who have experienced trauma, and should have a demonstrated track record of success or obvious passion to support these specific students.

A SailFuture teacher should have the ability to both motivate and connect with our students; relationships are the core of what we do. The teacher will teach both at our school in St. Petersburg, Fl and on our sailboat navigating around central America and the Caribbean.

  • Teach 6-10 students Monday through Friday from 8am - 4pm at SailFuture’s private school
  • Assess and record students’ progress and communicate daily and weekly with case manager, house parents, education director, and therapist on youth goals and progress
  • Assist as a Residential Change Agent in the SailFuture Group Home 1x / week
  • Participate in one to three 45-day sailing journeys per year
  • Participate and create lesson plans for service projects while on the boat
  • Provide differentiated instruction for a wide range of skills and abilities
  • Teacher will have creative latitude in lesson planning/curriculum development; we are looking for people to challenge the traditional model and find the best fit for our youth
  • Responsible for ensuring youth obtain high school diploma or GED and have post-secondary plan for education/job
