Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates classroom management, by utilizing effective behavioral interventions.
  • Identifies needs of students through ongoing evaluation (formal/informal) and monitoring of program.
  • Displays poise and maturity in their relations with fellow staff, parents and students.
  • Create an appropriate challenging learning environment which meet each student’s needs. Applies the curriculum effectively and utilizes a range of strategies and assessments to differentiate instruction.
  • Uses effective English in their oral and written communication.
  • Create a clean and safe working environment. Maintains competency in the environment of care to provide a functional and safe environment for students and staff.
  • Maintains a pleasant working relationship with all their colleagues in their professional capacity.
  • Each teacher is assigned as case manager to all the students with whom they work with.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of daily lesson plans in accordance with the NYS Learning Standards (i.e., lesson plan book).
  • Responsible for the completion of NYSAA data-folios and attending trainings as required by NYSED guidelines.
  • Compiles and maintains accurate data collection records for students, based on goals and objectives in relation to the students IEP.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop and implement individualized education plans and insures student’s program is developed and implemented based upon the total needs of the child and his/her family.
  • Completes program documentation in accordance with school/department requirements.
  • Respects the private nature of the special knowledge they have about each student and their families and use that knowledge only in the students’ best interests.
  • Submits written reports in timelines established by department supervisor, as specified in policies and procedures.
  • Insures records are kept properly; notes on team meetings, areas in need of follow-up, etc.
  • Insures the team operates smoothly and consistently, and that information is clearly and efficiently communicated within the team. Able to collaborate effectively with other professionals in the best interest of student. Consults with other members of the treatment team to assemble information consistent with the needs and capabilities of each student; integrates the most appropriate educational program into students’ overall program.
  • Insures parent is knowledgeable about the child’s program.
  • Insures the teacher aide(s) is knowledgeable about each students program.
  • Insures that communication to parents is coordinated and integrated. Partners with parents to enhance the student’s educational program and to promote student learning.
  • Participates in appropriate staff meetings/team meetings as required.
  • Participates in the reporting and development of student IEP goals at district meetings as required.
  • Assists in performing frequent daily lifting of individuals with disabilities (ages 2-21). Individuals may weigh approximately twenty-five through one hundred and twenty-five pounds, and can easily require two and three-man maneuvers to lift.
  • Responsible for day-to-day supervision of all classroom staff and volunteers.
  • Responsible for nurturing the intellectual, physical, emotional and social potential of students in their class.
  • Performs duties as assigned by Director of Educational Services/Principal or designee.

General Purpose of the Job

Responsible for the education of each student on his/her caseload in all major developmental domains. This will require that considerable emphasis be placed on coordination with other disciplines involved with the student’s program. Provides appropriate individualized instruction to meet the needs of students according to their Individualized Education Plan. Responsible for the evaluation and treatment of those students who have been referred by CSE/CPSE.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervises teacher aides. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; assists Assistant Principal in appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Supervises College Students and observational volunteers in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
