EKN Engineering in Irvine, CA is seeking a TCP Designer I to join our drafting-focused team. You’ll develop safe, accurate traffic control plans for construction and utility work following CA MUTCD and WATCH Manual standards. This is not an engineering role, but a long-term CAD/drafting career path.
You will collaborate with project managers, clients, and internal teams to ensure plans are compliant and constructible, while maintaining project files and deadlines.

As a TCP Designer I, you'll join EKN Engineering's growing team in a drafting-focused role built for someone who wants a long-term career in CAD and traffic control design work — this is not an engineering role, and it is not intended for candidates pursuing an engineering degree or license. You'll work closely with project managers, clients, and internal teams to develop safe, accurate, and efficient traffic control plans for construction and utility work within public streets and highways, in compliance with the CA MUTCD and WATCH Manual standards.
Provide CAD drafting support to a technical engineering team, working under general supervision and subject to supervisory review
Prepare preliminary and final traffic control plans for construction and utility projects using sketches, aerial imagery, field information, client plans, and project manager instructions, ensuring compliance with the CA MUTCD (latest edition), WATCH Manual (latest edition), and applicable local agency requirements
Review roadway, construction, utility, and site plans to identify work limits and determine appropriate traffic control requirements
Develop layouts for lane closures, shoulder closures, work zones, detours, and pedestrian/bicycle routing
Determine proper placement of signs, cones, barricades, channelizing devices, arrow boards, and other traffic control equipment
Review completed plans for accuracy, consistency, and constructability before submittal
Process redline comments and revise plans based on feedback from project managers, clients, and agencies
Follow company CAD standards, templates, and drafting procedures
Maintain accurate project files, drawing revisions, and supporting documentation
Update the company's system of record with the status of assigned projects
Manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment while meeting project deadlines
