Job description

The Tax Expert is part of a team‑of‑experts’ model, working alongside back‑office preparers and quality review to deliver Full-Service Tax Preparation and Assisted Tax Support to customers. In this model, the Tax Expert is the front‑office face of the engagement — the person hired for advisory and relationship skills first, not prep volume. While strong tax knowledge is essential, this role is fundamentally a customer‑service and review role: guiding, supporting, and reassuring customers, and validating the accuracy of returns prepared by the back office before they go out the door.

Required Credentials:

Candidates must possess at least one of the following credentials:

  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license
  • Active Enrolled Agent (EA) credential
  • Active Practicing Attorney (Juris Doctor, JD) license

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact across the engagement, including the welcome call, proactive outreach when a customer goes quiet, the client review call, and delivers the final outcome to the customer.
  • Conduct signer review of returns prepared by the back office: validating accuracy and compliance, catching anything that may have been missed, and being willing to sign and file work you did not personally prepare.
  • Produce clear, structured "Notes to Preparer" documentation — written handoffs that another expert must be able to act on directly. Precision in writing is as important as tax knowledge in this role.
  • Utilize government resources, professional tax tools.
  • Support and champion the success of every role in the chain — front office, back office, and quality review — recognizing that every return is a shared team outcome, not a solo work product.
  • Document all customer interactions
  • Work consistently toward meeting or exceeding company KPI metrics, including quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Comfort and confidence reviewing, validating, and signing tax returns prepared by another preparer
  • Minimum two seasons of paid tax preparation experience, with at least 30 completed returns per season (preparation and/or review experience).
  • Valid PTIN for the 2027 filing year.
  • Strong knowledge of tax laws, tax concepts, and familiarity with Form 1040 and associated schedules.
  • Excellent research skills and the ability to quickly locate reliable information using online resources.
  • College degree preferred; ideal backgrounds include business, finance, accounting, or taxation.
  • Must schedule & work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
