BDO USA is seeking a Tax Senior Manager for the Business Incentives Group (BIG). This role leads tax consulting on BIG credits, documents positions, and guides the team while supporting marketing and growth initiatives.

With extensive BIG tax experience and leadership skills, you will enhance client relationships, supervise staff, and drive process improvements across projects and examinations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, tax, or finance required or equivalent.
  • Seven+ years of BIG tax consulting experience required.
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with Excel/Word and tax software Caseware/GoSystems.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise BIG Managers, Senior Associates, and staff; provide guidance and evaluate performance.
  • Lead tax consulting engagements, develop solutions, and communicate effectively with clients.
  • Identify opportunities for BIG benefits, document positions, and support during exams and appeals.
  • Drive process improvements and contribute to business development for the BIG practice.

Job Description

A Tax Senior Manager, Business Incentives Group (BIG) is charged with helping clients identify, document, and support tax positions related to their BIG tax credits and deductions. The BIG Senior Manager is a critical member of the BIG leadership team and actively participates in the marketing and business development of the BIG practice. In addition, the BIG Senior Manager develops and drives process improvement and team‑building initiatives, maintains client relationships, and acts as a source of guidance to team members.

Job Duties
  • Tax Specialization
    • Maintains and develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding BIG tax benefits
    • Identifies client opportunities and issues having to do with tax specializations other than BIG
    • Tax Consulting
      • Develops, recommends, and implements solutions to provide clients maximum tax benefits
      • Stays informed of new legal and factual developments affecting clients’ BIG tax positions and identifies and communicates to partners effective approaches to optimize these positions
      • Identifies process improvements regarding, e.g., the processes of identifying, documenting, and supporting BIG benefits on exam and at appeals
      • Identifies non-BIG tax and business opportunities for clients and prospects
    • Tax Controversy
      • Effectively represents clients before tax authorities
      • Responds effectively to inquiries from federal and state tax authorities regarding BIG tax issues and questions
    • ASC 740-10
      • Understands and applies industry and firm FAS 109 and FIN48 standards
      • Recognizes, measures, and documents effectively financial benefit of BIG positions
      • Research
        • Identifies complex situations where research is necessary provides an outline of the issue(s) and conducts appropriate investigation on identified topics
        • Confirms accuracy of facts and sources where appropriate prior to composing a detailed report of research findings
        • Prepares studies of tax implications and outlines alternative courses of action to clients
        • Composes effective research memos in support of projects / transactions
        • Develops effective presentations for marketing and sales opportunities
    • Tax Compliance
      • Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities
      • Identifies options for minimizing client tax and reporting burdens
      • Identifies “gray areas” and recognizes and communicates to partners related risks
      • Conducts detailed reviews of appropriate work papers and tax returns forms to identify basic, complex and advanced issues
      • Ensures firm risk management and tax quality control standards and protocols are met
      • Communicates with clients and appropriate Core Tax Services, Assurance, and Consulting personnel regarding any issues
    • Strategy Development
      • Develops new or improved ideas and strategies to advance the position of clients, the firm or firm personnel
      • Suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition
    • Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Effectively supervises and reviews the day‑to‑day work of BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns
  • Ensures BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns are well trained in all required areas
  • Effectively evaluates the performance of BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns and assists in the development of goals and objectives to enhance their professional development
  • Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes constructive performance evaluations for BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns
  • Acts as Career Advisor to BIG Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree, required
  • Degree in accounting, tax, or finance, preferred
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Seven (7) or more years of prior experience, required
  • Six (6) or more years’ experience in BIG tax consulting, required
  • Prior experience supervising tax consulting professionals, required
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships, preferred
License / Certifications
  • CPA, preferred
Software
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
  • Experience with tax related software and research databases such as Caseware, GoSystems, and other comparable programs

  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the BIG tax area commensurate with the level of experience required above
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior analytical and research skills
  • Solid organizational skills, especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details
  • Ability to successfully multi‑task while working independently and within a group environment
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline‑driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively manage a team of tax professionals and delegating work assignments as needed
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with firm and client personnel and the ability to successfully interact with professionals at all levels
  • Ability to cultivate a positive team environment on engagements and contribute to the professional development of team personnel
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on assigned engagements

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

National Range: $99,750 - $262,500

Maryland Range: $99,750 - $262,500

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $99,750 - $262,500

Washington DC Range: $99,750 - $262,500
