Tax Manager | SALT
This pivotal leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax compliance, planning, and accounting within the organization. The tax manager ensures accurate financial reporting, maintains compliance with tax laws and regulations, and implements strategies to minimize tax liabilities while maximizing financial efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage income apportionment, income allocation, and multi‑state apportionment projects.
- Conduct and review income tax nexus studies to identify filing responsibilities and ensure compliance.
- Provide leadership on sales and use tax matters, including taxability reviews, audit defense, and use tax planning.
- Guide clients on sourcing methods, including cost of performance and market‑based sourcing approaches.
- Interpret and advise on Public Law 86‑272 and its impact on state income tax filings.
- Oversee voluntary disclosure agreements, closing agreements, and compromise negotiations.
- Develop tax strategies for transaction structuring, business purchase and sale structuring, and due diligence.
- Manage reverse refund audits, managed audits, and compliance processes for multi‑state operations.
- Prepare and supervise tax assessment protests and related pleadings, ensuring timely resolution with taxing authorities.
- Provide technical guidance to clients and team members on inquiries from state and local taxing agencies.
- Ensure accurate and timely delivery of compliance reporting services across multiple jurisdictions.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor a team of professionals, providing guidance and training as needed.
- Manage client relationships, ensuring clear communication and excellent service delivery.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement best practices and innovative tax solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field preferred (CPA strongly preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in a CPA firm or SALT, with leadership in a managerial role.
- Extensive knowledge of state and local tax laws, compliance, and planning strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience presenting to clients and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, mentor staff, and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in tax research tools and software (e.g., CCH, UltraTax CS, QuickBooks).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
