Job summary

Windham Brannon in Atlanta, GA, is seeking a Tax Manager to lead nonprofit tax planning, consulting, and compliance for private foundations and public charities.

The role requires 8+ years in public accounting, CPA or EA license, and proven client management with mentoring responsibilities; you will work with clients and outside advisors to grow the nonprofit practice in a hybrid environment. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in progressive public accounting experience, including leadership in tax management
  • Active CPA or Enrolled Agent license (EA)
  • 8+ years of nonprofit tax return experience (private foundations, public charities)
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships, multiple engagements and teams
  • Mentor and develop staff; deliver responsive client service
  • Strong communication, project management and organization skills
  • Tech-forward mindset with interest in process improvement and AI tools for nonprofit tax compliance, training, and knowledge sharing

Responsibilities

  • Interact with clients to provide nonprofit tax planning, consulting and compliance expertise
  • Review nonprofit Form 990-EZ, 990 and 990-PF as needed
  • Review corporate, partnership, trust or individual tax returns as nonprofit workload allows
  • Manage multiple complex projects, coordinating Windham Brannon and client resources
  • Research and analyze tax implications of federal/state UBIT for nonprofit activities
  • Prepare nonprofit tax exemption applications (Form 1023) and reinstatements
  • Collaborate with outside advisors to provide holistic planning
  • Mentor junior staff and provide guidance
  • Educate staff on nonprofit tax laws and regulations through training
  • Develop new business relationships to grow nonprofit clientele

What you will be doing…
  • Interact closely with clients to provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise.
  • Review form 990-EZ, 990, and 990-PF for private foundations, public charities, and other nonprofits approximately 50 percent of the time. As the practice grows this percentage will increase.
  • Review of corporate, partnership, trust and/or individual tax returns the remaining time. This work would decrease as the nonprofit work increases.
  • Manage and implement multiple and often complex projects simultaneously, which include client communication, review of detailed calculations, analysis, data gathering, and coordination of Windham Brannon and client resources.
  • Conduct research and analysis for tax implications of federal and state Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) issues related to nonprofit specific activities.
  • Manage the preparation of Tax-Exempt Status Reinstatements including working with the client to gather or recreate the necessary information, and review of Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Collaborate with members of client’s other outside advisors in providing holistic and comprehensive planning services to the client.
  • Review and conduct research & analysis of a wide range of tax issues.
  • Motivate and mentor junior staff members by providing them with leadership, counseling, and professional guidance.
  • Be a resource for the firm regarding nonprofit financial best practices.
  • Helping to educate staff working on nonprofits of the tax laws and regulations including annual training of newly hired staff on nonprofit tax preparation.
  • Develop new business relationships with potential clients and outside advisors to grow Windham Brannon’s clientele base and work to foster on-going efforts to obtain additional opportunities for the Firm.
What you bring…
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive public accounting experience; including 3+ years serving in a Tax Manager or equivalent leadership role
  • Active CPA or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) license
  • 8+ years of experience preparing and reviewing private foundations, public charities, and other nonprofits
  • Demonstrated experience managing client relationships, multiple engagements, and engagement teams
  • Proven ability to mentor, develop, and review the work of tax professionals
  • A strong sense of ownership for delivering responsive client service
  • Excellent communication, project management, and organizational skills
  • Technology-forward mindset with an interest in process improvement, automation, and the use of AI tools to enhance nonprofit tax compliance, training, and knowledge sharing.
