Overview

The Digital Assets Tax Manager assists in providing tax compliance and consulting services to clients in the digital assets space, including lab companies doing protocol launches, NFT creators, stablecoins, infrastructure companies involved in mining and staking, exchanges, fintech companies, and corporations engaging with crypto/blockchain solutions. This role involves applying tax knowledge to identify potential issues, communicate risks, and note changes in tax policy. The position may also involve marketing, networking, business development within the area of specialization, and providing written tax advice to clients.

Job Duties
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
    • Apply understanding of client circumstances, documentation, and legal requirements to prepare filings (tax returns) with a review/documentation process that minimizes client burden.
    • Collect all data needed to comply with filing requirements and identify missing items for return preparation.
    • Utilize Firm compliance software to maximize efficiency in the tax preparation process.
    • Collaborate with Principals, Tax Seniors, and Associates on project completion (follow-up on open items).
    • Deliver high-quality federal, state, and international tax compliance services.
    • Lead complex engagements with a team of tax professionals and manage engagement aspects including billing, collections, and budgeting.
    • Build and manage client relationships and document work and conclusions in the client tax file.
  • Research
    • Identify when research is needed; frame issues to be researched and report analysis clearly and concisely.
    • Apply Firm standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns; involve firm specialists as appropriate.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Identify, develop, recommend, and implement efficient and effective tax strategies.
    • Lead clients with legal entity structuring, token genesis events, deal analysis, revenue recognition, sourcing, and implementation of tax objectives.
    • Prepare and lead client meetings on advisory and compliance projects related to tax planning opportunities and the tax implications of various transactions.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas (e.g., compliance, provision, corporate, partnership, state and local, international, structuring, M&A).
    • May organize and conduct internal CPE training in the area of specialization, involving Firm specialists.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervise Associates and Senior Associates on projects; review work and provide feedback.
    • Train Associates and Seniors on current software tools; act as Career Advisor; schedule and manage workload; provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education & Experience
  • Education
    • Bachelor’s Degree required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
    • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred.
  • Experience
    • Five or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
    • Prior supervisory experience required.
    • Blockchain and Cryptocurrency industry experience supporting lab companies, NFT creators, stablecoins, infrastructure companies (mining/staking), exchanges, fintech, and related entities preferred.
  • License/Certifications
    • CPA certification, attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent required.
    • Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
  • Software
    • Experience with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat preferred.
    • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
  • Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills; ability to delegate effectively.
    • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills; ability to work well in a team; capable of leading a tax professional team.
    • Ability to compose written tax advice; develop and maintain client relationships; executive presence as a primary client contact for issues and resolutions.
