Job summary

BDO USA, LLP is looking for a Tax Manager, Alternative Investments to support tax compliance and consulting for venture capital, private equity, real estate, and hedge fund clients.

You will lead engagements, coordinate with partners and staff, and oversee billing and budgets while building strong client relationships in a dynamic, team‑oriented environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; accounting/finance or related field preferred.
  • Five or more years of tax experience in public accounting or advisory.
  • CPA, EA, or attorney eligibility required; other degrees optional.
  • Experience with partnerships taxation and financial services funds a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tax compliance and consulting services for alt investment clients.
  • Lead complex engagements, manage budget, billing, and client relations.
  • Collaborate with principals, seniors, and associates to complete engagements.
  • Review filings, ensure regulatory compliance, and minimize client tax burden.
  • Mentor and supervise Tax Seniors and Associates; develop the team.

Job description

Job Summary:

The Tax Manager, Alternative Investments assists in providing tax compliance & consulting services to our Venture Capital, Private Equity, Hedge Fund, and Real Estate clients.



Job Duties:

Tax Compliance


  • Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM").


    • Applies understanding of client's unique set of circumstances, documentation, and/or other requirements mandated by law and prepares required filings (tax returns) using a system of review and documentation to ensure that the client is in full compliance, while keeping the client's tax and reporting burden's as low as possible;

    • Ensures all data needed to comply with filing requirements are collected; identifies and properly communicates missing items to prepare return;

    • Utilizes Firm compliance software to maximize efficiency in tax prep process


  • Effectively collaborates with Principals, Tax Seniors, and Associates on completion of project (follow‑up with Open items list)

  • Delivers high quality federal, state, and international tax compliance services

  • Leads complex engagements with a team of tax professionals

  • Manages the engagement including billing, collections, and the budget for projects

  • Builds and manages client relationships

  • Ensures/Documents client work and conclusions in the client tax file



Tax Consulting


  • Assists with identifying, developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective tax strategies



Supervisory Responsibilities


  • Manages and mentors teams of Tax Seniors and Associates



Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Education


  • Bachelor's Degree, required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, preferred Master's Degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred



Experience


  • Five (5) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required

  • Financial Services industry experience supporting Alternative Investment funds including: Venture Capital, Private Equity, Real Estate, and Hedge Funds, preferred

  • Proficiency in the taxation of partnerships, preferred

  • Prior supervisory experience required



License/Certifications


  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required

  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role beneficial



Software


  • Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat, preferred

  • Experience with tax research databases, preferred

  • Proficient in tax compliance process software, preferred

Salary


  • California Range: $112,000 - $150,000

  • Colorado Range: $90,000 - $130,000

  • Illinois Range: $105,000 - $130,000

  • Maryland Range: $113,000 - $120,000

  • Massachusetts Range: $120,000 - $127,000

  • Minnesota Range: $90,000 - $120,000

  • New Jersey Range: $115,000 - $140,000

  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $125,000 - $150,000

  • Washington Range: $110,000 - $125,000

  • Washington DC Range: $120,000 - $140,000
