We are hiring a full-time Tax Manager for a CPA-led outsourced finance firm that provides bookkeeping, tax, and advisory services to restoration and trades businesses. This is a hands-on role with a clear path into department leadership. Initially, you’ll prepare and review returns yourself while building the standards, processes, and capacity model for the tax department. As the firm grows, you’ll hire and develop preparers underneath you and transition toward owning the tax function.
The ideal candidate is already reviewing other people’s U.S. tax returns and is ready to take the next step into leadership. You do not need previous people-management experience, but you should have strong technical tax experience and genuinely want to build and lead a department. The CEO is a CPA and currently oversees this function, so you’ll have hands‑on support during the transition and continued guidance on particularly complex technical issues.
Full‑time. Fully remote. Must be ENGLISH‑SPEAKING.
Hours: 9 am to 5 pm - CST
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and review U.S. tax returns across partnerships, S-corps, C-corps, and individual 1040s
- Own the tax filing calendar across all clients and entity types
- Build and maintain clear review standards and workpaper processes for the tax department
- Manage year-round tax work, including quarterly estimates, tax planning, S-corp reasonable compensation, and year‑end tax positions
- Own TaxDome as the tax system of record and ensure tax workflows are followed correctly
- Review returns prepared by others, identify errors or missing information, and provide clear feedback
- Work directly with clients on tax questions, planning opportunities, and technical recommendations
- Partner with the bookkeeping team to improve the bookkeeping‑to‑tax handoff and resolve issues before they impact tax preparation
- Build the department’s capacity plan ahead of tax season and identify staffing needs before they become bottlenecks
- Hire and develop tax preparers as the department grows
- Train and provide technical guidance to junior preparers
- Monitor workload and raise capacity or technical issues early
- Help build a year‑round tax offering that goes beyond filing returns and provides ongoing value to clients
Key Qualifications:
- 4-7 years of experience working in U.S. tax
- At least 1 year of meaningful tax return review experience
- Strong experience reviewing other preparers’ work, identifying errors, and sending returns back with clear technical feedback
- Strong knowledge of U.S. small business taxation, including partnerships, S-corps, C-corps, and individual returns
- Strong understanding of basis, distributions, reasonable compensation, and multi‑state tax considerations
- Active U.S. PTIN or willingness to obtain one upon accepting the role
- Comfortable preparing returns directly while the department is being built
- Able to explain complex tax issues clearly to clients, including situations where the recommendation may not be what the client wants to hear
- Self‑directed and comfortable taking ownership in a fully remote environment
- Proactive about identifying technical, process, and capacity issues before they become larger problems
- Interested in building a tax department rather than simply inheriting and maintaining an existing system
- Must own and be able to use a working computer with high‑speed internet
- Must be ENGLISH‑SPEAKING
