Tax Manager (Public Accounting) In Office

Chawla & Chawla PC

Gaithersburg, MD | Full-Time | In-Person

$125,000 – $180,000 base + performance bonus up to 20%

About Us

Chawla & Chawla PC is a Top 400 CPA firm and a 35+ year, family run public accounting firm based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with a growing international support presence in India. With 80+ professionals, we serve clients across government contracting, medical services, real estate, non-profits, and professional services.

We’re in a phase of intentional growth and modernization, investing in better systems, automation, and AI-assisted workflows while preserving the mentorship, collaboration, and accountability that define a strong family firm.

At C&C, Managers run the practice. You'll own client relationships, lead engagements end-to-end, develop the next generation of staff, and help shape how a modern tax practice operates.

Why This Role Exists

We're scaling our tax practice and need Managers who can carry a book of business, not just work on one.

This role is ideal for someone who:
  • Has the technical depth to be the final technical voice on most returns
  • Wants to own client relationships, not just prepare work.
  • Leads and develops staff rather than waiting to be led.
  • Cares about engagement economics: realization, scope, and efficiency.
  • Is energized by rebuilding workflows with automation and AI, not just tolerating change.
  • Sees this as a step toward Senior Tax Manager, Tax Director, and ultimately Tax Partner.

If you’re looking for a comfortable role where expectations are low and change is slow, this won’t be the right fit.

What You’ll Do
  • Own a portfolio of clients as the primary day-to-day relationship manager.
  • Serve as the technical reviewer and final sign-off on federal and state individual and business returns across multiple entity types (1040, 1120, 1120‑S, 1065, 1041).
  • Manage engagement scope, budgets, timelines, and realization; identify and communicate scope changes.
  • Lead IRS and state controversy matters, including notices, audits, and complex client inquiries.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and deliver proactive advisory work (entity structuring, compensation planning, multi-state nexus, international considerations where relevant).
  • Research and form defensible positions on complex tax issues, including the impact of new and proposed legislation.
  • Partner with other Managers, Directors, and Partners on compilation and review engagements and cross-service-line work.
  • Drive process improvements, automation, and AI-assisted initiatives within your engagements and across the practice.
  • Support business development: referral relationships, scoping new work, and participating in proposals.
  • Stay current on tax law, accounting standards, and best practices, and translate that into practical guidance for clients and staff.
What We’re Looking For

This is a Manager-level role. We're looking for someone ready to lead, not someone ready to learn how to lead.

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
  • 5 to 7 years of public accounting tax experience, with at least 1 to 2 years in a review or supervisory capacity.
  • Deep hands‑on experience across individual and business tax, including pass‑throughs and multi‑state.
  • Strong foundation in U.S. tax compliance and GAAP; comfort forming and defending technical positions.
  • Proven ability to develop staff: giving feedback, delegating effectively, and raising the bar around you.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Clear, direct communication with clients, staff, and partners.
  • US work authorization is required. H‑1B sponsorship is considered for the right long‑term fit.
Strongly Preferred:
  • CPA license or active pursuit of CPA.
  • Experience in one or more of our focus industries: government contracting, medical/professional services, real estate, or non‑profits.
  • Experience with international tax matters (inbound/outbound, Forms 5471, 5472, 8865, 8938, FBAR).
  • Genuine interest in automation, AI, and accounting technology, and a track record of acting on that interest.
  • Desire to grow into Senior Tax Manager, Tax Director, and Tax Partner over time.

If you're uncomfortable owning outcomes, giving hard feedback, or rethinking how work gets done, this role will not be a fit.

What We Offer
  • Competitive base salary: $125,000 – $180,000, based on experience.
  • Annual performance bonus up to 20% of base.
  • Clear growth path toward Senior Tax Manager, Tax Director, and Tax Partner.
  • CPE, continuing education, and leadership development support.
  • 401(k) with employer match and profit sharing.
  • Company‑paid short‑term and long‑term disability and life insurance.
  • 100% employer‑paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees.
  • HSA plan options.
  • Paid vacation and holidays.
  • Professional training and education reimbursements.
  • CPA exam fee reimbursement.
  • Relocation assistance.
  • $2,000 employee referral bonus.
Our Culture

We value curiosity, accountability, and effort. Managers at C&C are trusted to run their engagements, speak up with ideas, and build the practice around them. We are serious about quality, but flexible in how we get there. The best ideas don't come from titles. They come from people who care.

Location & Work Style
  • Full-time, in-office role in Gaithersburg, MD
  • Daily collaboration and in person mentorship are core to this role.
  • Two peak periods: February 1 through April 15 and August 1 through October 15. Extended hours are expected during those windows.
  • Candidates must be able to commute or relocate prior to start.
How to Stand Out

Strong candidates typically:

  • Have carried their own book of business or been on the path to one.
  • Can articulate not just how a tax position was taken, but why, and how they'd defend it.
  • Have visibly developed the people under them.
  • Have pushed their prior firm to adopt better tools or workflows.
  • Want to build something, not just maintain it.

Chawla & Chawla P.C. is an equal opportunity employer.
