Job summary

New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Buffalo invites applications for Auditor 1 (Tax). The role conducts on-site field audits and examinations of taxpayers' books and records to determine compliance with New York Tax Law.

You will travel locally and nationally, communicate with taxpayers and supervisors, and develop expertise in tax procedures, security rules, and department policies. A bachelor’s degree with accounting/auditing/taxation credits is required; NY HELPS eligibility

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree including 24 credits in accounting/auditing/taxation.
• Or Bachelor’s degree including 18 credits in accounting/auditing/taxation and 6 credits in finance, economics, or business.
• Eligible for NY HELPS program; non-competitive appointment may be used.
• Must meet travel requirements and have a valid driver’s license where applicable.

Responsibilities

• Conduct audits and examinations of taxpayers’ books and records to determine compliance with NYS Tax Law.
• Develop and maintain knowledge of tax law and Audit Division procedures and policies, including Code of Conduct and security rules.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, taxpayers and their representatives in oral and written forms.
• Learn and maintain skills in computer technology, including laptops, PCs, software, and mainframe applications.
• Travel frequently, within and outside New York State, to audit sites and training events.
• Represent the Audit Division at conferences and hearings as needed; assist attorneys with resolutions.
