Job summary

Software Placement Group, SPG is seeking a Tax Director for its San Jose office. The role offers exposure to SEC and closely held clients across industries, with a clear path toward Partnership for the right candidate.

You will lead technical tax reviews, mentor staff, manage client service within budget, and represent clients before taxing authorities when needed. This is a full-time, on-site position requiring robust CPA credentials.

Qualifications

  • Seven to ten years of public accounting experience, with progression in tax complexity and research.
  • At least two years representing clients before taxing authorities.
  • Minimum one year supervising and directing the work of tax preparers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Forty hours of continuing education annually to maintain skills.
  • Current and valid CPA license required.
  • Member in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical tax review and approval of tax returns and governmental examinations of any complexity.
  • Serve as SME in a discipline or industry.
  • Manage client service responsibilities and ensure timely completion within budget.
  • Oversee larger tax returns and delegate to tax preparers as needed.
  • Participate in client meetings and tax planning with the A&A department for larger clients.
  • Provide guidance to tax staff on issues and questions.
  • Communicate developments affecting firm clients to relevant personnel.
  • Delegate and manage governmental examinations; may represent clients before taxing authorities.
  • Maintain knowledge of staff qualifications and review staff assignments.
  • Develop staff through recruitment, evaluations, training, and professional development programs.
  • Ensure accurate billing and collections processes.
  • Stay informed on economic trends and potential legislation.
  • Engage in practice development through referrals and industry activities.
  • Travel occasionally to client offices; overtime during Jan 1–Apr 15.

Overview

A well-established and highly profitable regional CPA firm is seeking a Tax Director to join its growing team. This role offers exposure to both SEC and closely held clients across diverse industries, with a clear path toward Partnership for the right candidate.

What you'll do
  • Perform technical tax review and approval of all tax returns and governmental tax examinations of any complexity
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in a particular discipline or industry
  • Manage client service responsibilities and ensure assignments are completed within budgeted time
  • Assume full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegate work to tax preparers as needed
  • Participate actively in client meetings and tax planning efforts, supporting the A&A Department with larger clients
  • Serve as a resource for tax preparers, specialists, and A&A staff on tax issues and questions
  • Assume client service responsibility for clients handled by Tax Managers or delegated by Partners
  • Communicate important tax developments affecting firm clients to appropriate personnel
  • Delegate and manage governmental tax examinations; may represent clients before taxing authorities
  • Maintain familiarity with the qualifications of all tax staff and review staff assignments for appropriateness
  • Develop trained staff through recruiting, performance evaluations, training aid development, and instruction in professional development programs
  • Ensure accurate and timely billing and collection processes
  • Maintain complete knowledge of the firm's philosophy and positions on tax matters
  • Stay informed on general economic and political trends and potential legislation affecting the business climate
  • Participate in firm practice development through referral sources, community, and industry activities
  • Responsible for development, coaching, and training of seniors, semi-seniors, and staff accountants
  • Participate in reviews and evaluations of the tax department
  • Travel occasionally for work at client offices, meetings, and seminars
  • Work occasional overtime throughout the year, with heavy overtime (potentially exceeding 55 hours per week) required from January 1 to April 15
Required qualifications
  • Seven to ten years experience in public accounting, with demonstrated progression in tax complexity, scope, and research
  • At least two (2) years experience representing clients before taxing authorities
  • Minimum one (1) year experience supervising and directing the work of tax preparers
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
  • Minimum of forty hours of continuing education required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills
  • Current and valid certified public accountant’s license required
  • Must be a member in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs
Preferred qualifications
  • Master’s degree in taxation preferred
