Job summary

Housing Trust Group is seeking a Tax & Audit Manager to oversee partnership and corporate tax compliance, annual financial audits, and related assignments. You will be the primary internal liaison with external CPA firms, syndicators, and lenders while coordinating deadlines across multiple entity returns.

This role requires guiding a team of accountants, coordinating with Development and Construction to verify cost data, and driving process improvements within tax, audit, and cost-certification

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 5–10 years of progressive experience in tax compliance, financial audits, or a combination of public accounting and industry experience in real estate or affordable housing.
  • Experience with LIHTC partnerships, IRS Form 8609, and K-1 preparation/review strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with FHFC cost certification processes (GCCC, DFCC) and Florida affordable-housing regulatory requirements is a significant plus.
  • Experience coordinating with external audit firms on partnership audits.
  • Exposure to HUD, Public Housing Authorities, or other affordable-housing compliance frameworks is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the annual audits and tax returns cycle for all HTG entities, coordinating with outside CPA firms from draft review through e-file signature and submission.
  • Track extension filing deadlines across partnership and corporate returns.
  • Review draft tax returns for the entities overseen by Corporate Department.
  • Serve as primary liaison with external audit firms for annual financial statement audits of corporate entities: coordinate preparation and delivery of PBC items; review draft audit packages, respond to auditor inquiries, and track open items.
  • Oversee the cost certification audit process.
  • Manage FHFC comment-response cycles: analyze comments, prepare responses, track resubmissions, and follow through to acceptance.
  • Collaborate with Development and Construction departments to gather cost data, resolve allocation questions, and verify consistency with project budgets.
  • Maintain organized electronic files for all tax returns, audits, and cost certifications in SharePoint.
  • Mentor Senior Accountants and Staff, including guiding and educating them in technical areas, and identifying professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with new entity tax setup (EIN applications, state registrations) as the development pipeline requires.
  • Identify and implement process improvements across tax, audit, and cost-cert workflows.

SUMMARY

The Tax & Audit Manager oversees partnership and corporate tax compliance, annual financial audits, and other assignments as designated. This role is the primary internal point of contact for external CPA firms, syndicators, and lenders on these matters and is expected to independently manage deadlines across multiple entity returns, concurrent audits, and a rolling cost-certification pipeline.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage the annual audits and tax returns cycle for all HTG entities, coordinating with outside CPA firms from draft review through e-file signature and submission
  • Track extension filing deadlines across partnership and corporate returns
  • Review draft tax returns for the entities overseen by Corporate Department

EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Strong working knowledge of partnership tax rules (Subchapter K), LIHTC regulations (Section 42), and multi-state tax filing requirements
  • Solid understanding of GAAP as applied to real estate partnerships, including developer fee recognition, equity accounting, and intercompany transactions
  • Ability to manage a high-volume, deadline-driven workload across 50+ entities with competing priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable corresponding directly with CPA firm partners, syndicator asset managers, and institutional lenders
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to research technical tax or audit issues and develop practical solutions
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with accounting systems (MRI, Yardi, or similar real estate platforms)
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy in financial reporting and regulatory submissions
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments (Development, Construction, Asset Management, Legal) and foster a productive team environment
