Job description

A smaller CPA firm can be a brilliant place to build your tax career. But only if it's the right one.

There's not much point sitting next to a Partner if they're too busy to teach you anything.

This small firm in Detroit is strategic about how they are growing.

They hire people before they're desperately needed, and they're happy to turn clients away if they're not the right fit. Rather than taking on every bit of work that comes through the door and expecting everyone else to somehow find another 10 hours in their week.

For someone earlier in their tax career, that really can make all the difference.

You'll be working alongside experienced accountants and Partners who actually have the time to sit with you, answer your questions and explain why something's done a certain way, rather than just telling you what needs doing next.

And you'll get some good variety.

The firm works with small and mid sized businesses, high net worth individuals and a lot of real estate clients, so you won't spend your first few years doing exactly the same thing every day.

You'll also get to know your clients as you develop, rather than being someone who just prepares returns without ever knowing who's on the other side of them.

There's room to grow here too. The firm has plans to expand, and they'd much rather develop good people internally than constantly look outside the business when more senior positions become available.

Maybe you're in a bigger firm where you're one of many Associates, or perhaps you're somewhere smaller but don't feel like you're getting the support you need.

You don't need to have everything figured out or tick every single box. A willingness to learn and some public accounting tax experience would be a good starting point.

I start at 6am EST, so mornings are absolutely fine. After 5pm works too, although I can't promise I'll be quite as lively by then.
