The Task Force Coordinator provides localized oversight and leadership to the fire suppression task force and employees assigned to it for various activities. They assist the Fire Coordinator in interacting with communities, fire departments, and other response and support agencies across the state as needed. The coordinator promotes local capacity building, initiates certifications, accesses Web EOC for daily reporting, obtains a Texas Class A CDL, attends required training, and assists with the delivery of Forest Resource Protection programs to local communities. The coordinator operates and maintains wildland fire suppression equipment, responds to wildland fires and other all‑hazard incidents, and conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an emergency responder (including wildland fire). This may require working long hours, minimal rest, primitive conditions, exposure to harsh environmental conditions, walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, bending, kneeling, lifting heavy objects, driving motor vehicles for long distances, operating heavy equipment and computers, and handling emotionally stressful situations. Responders must meet a moderate physical fitness standard of a 2‑mile walk carrying a 25‑lb pack in 30 minutes or less.
- Deliver capacity‑building programs to VFDs and municipal fire departments; provide leadership on fire‑related issues to promote local and statewide capabilities.
- Administer assigned personnel and deliver programs developed by Area Operations Chief, Regional Operations Chief, Fire Prevention Specialists, Wildland Urban Interface Specialists, and Prescribed Burning Specialists; support the Fire Risk Assessment Coordinator with data collection.
- Serve on TAMFS Incident Management, Fire Prevention, and Urban Interface Mitigation Teams with related training and preparedness.
- Provide support for the Forest Resource Development Division and other TAMFS programs as required.
- Manage and account for assigned TAMFS credit cards, vehicle log books, daily activity reports, and any assigned equipment in accordance with applicable laws, rules, procedures, and guidelines.
- Comply with all loss prevention, environmental health, and safety standards as established by applicable laws and rules.
- Within 90 days of hire, establish a primary residency within 30 minutes travel time of the home base to ensure timely response for duty as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Required Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Two (2) years of relevant experience may substitute for one (1) year of education.
- Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in natural resources, land management, fire science, emergency management, or business administration.
- Required Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of wildland firefighting; minimum three (3) years of fire suppression experience with a recognized fire department or wildland agency.
- Preferred Experience: Advanced level wildland experience as a firefighter and instructor with a wildland agency or recognized fire department; experience as a firefighter and instructor with a recognized volunteer or career fire department.
- Required Knowledge: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; wildland firefighting skills (hand tools, personal protective equipment, wildland fire apparatus); water‑delivery equipment; NWCG firefighting training; Incident Command System principles and concepts.
- Preferred Knowledge: NWCG firefighter training or equivalent, IMT experience; proficient use of mapping and GPS programs; single‑resource boss qualifications; dozer operations.
- Required Ability: Multi‑task and work cooperatively with others.
- Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations: Required: Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL). Preferred: NFPA1041 certification; TCFP or SFFMA Basic Firefighter or higher certification.
- Other Requirements: Respond to wildfires and all‑hazard incidents as requested; meet moderate physical fitness test of a 2‑mile walk carrying a 25‑lb pack in 30 minutes or less (preferred: 3‑mile walk carrying a 45‑lb pack in 45 minutes or less).
