Job summary

Aero Air, a People Centered Aircraft Service Company in Madras, OR, seeks a Tanker MRO Manager for the MD80 series. You will oversee the MD-80 fleet’s maintenance, airworthiness, and dispatch reliability, with deep knowledge of JT8D-200 engines and aging-aircraft programs.

Lead a team of Crew Chiefs and A&P technicians, manage maintenance budgets and legacy parts sourcing, and ensure compliance with FAA directives. Travel up to 65% is required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years aviation maintenance experience
  • 8 years aviation maintenance experience in leadership roles preferred
  • FAA A&P Certification; IA preferred

Responsibilities

Position Summary

TheTanker MRO Manager-MD80 Series is the technical expert in Aviation Maintenance, Repair and Operations. This role is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, airworthiness and dispatch reliability of McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series fleet and requires the incumbent to have deep knowledge of the JT8D-200 series engines, aging aircraft programs and structural repair (SRM) applications for classic commercial airframes.

Required Duties and Responsibilities -Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the required duties and responsibilities.

  • Direct all scheduled and unscheduled MRO maintenance lines for the MD-80 series fleet to maximize dispatch reliability.
  • Manage heavy maintenance visits (A and C Checks), line maintenance, and structural repair projects.
  • Troubleshoot complex systems unique to the MD-80, including its analog/digital hybrid avionics, pneumatic systems, and mechanical flight control rigging.
  • Oversee JT8D-200 engine maintenance, performance tracking, borescope inspections, and engine replacement schedules.
  • Approve and certify aircraft return-to-service (RTS) following complex maintenance or modifications.
  • Ensure full compliance with FAA Airworthiness Directives (ADs), manufacturer Service Bulletins (SBs), Internal company SOP's, Repair Station Manuals, and aging aircraft programs.
  • Maintain complete technical documentation, including aircraft logs, maintenance records, and tracking systems.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of Crew Chiefs/ A&P technicians to act as onsite quality control representatives at the MRO.
  • Coordinate with supply chain units to source hard-to-find components and legacy parts specific to the MD-80 aircraft.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, tracking labor hour expenditures and part costs against project milestones.
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors for long periods of time, utilizing various types of equipment, stands, ladders, boom lifts, scissor lifts, tugs, forklifts, etc.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 65+% of the time.
  • Must maintain reliable, regular, and predictable attendance.
  • Successful completion and favorable results of pre-employment drug screen and criminal history background check.
  • Adhere to all Aero Air/Erickson Aero Tanker policies and standards of conduct.
  • Other activities as directed.

Required Knowledge, Qualifications and Education

  • Expert knowledge of mechanical flight control rigging and cable tension systems.
  • Proven experience with structural modifications and rivet layouts using the MD-80 SRM.
  • Proficiency with modern aviation Maintenance Management Systems (MMS) or MRO tracking software.
  • Clean record/history with FAA and primary customer base (US Forest Service and other government agencies).
  • Must maintain a valid state driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Must maintain a valid passport or obtain a valid passport.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.

  • Valid FAA A&P Certification; Inspection Authorization preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a supervisor role as a Lead Mechanic or Maintenance Manager.
  • 8 years aviation maintenance experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in aviation management, engineering, business or related field or comparable work experience.
  • 5 years' experience in a leadership role within a maintenance organization.
  • FAA Inspection Authorization (IA).

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to regularly lift 10-50 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 50-100 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb all day.
  • Accurate hand/eye coordination.
  • Finger dexterity is required as well as hand strength, with the ability to grasp, lift, push and pull.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • This position frequently works near moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Regular exposure to moderate noise level.
  • Occasional exposure to loud engine testing and module balancing.
  • Ability to wear and utilize personal protective equipment and gear.

Under the Department of Transportation-Federal Aviation Administration (DOT-FAA), the above listed position is categorized as a safety sensitive role.
