Job summary

Austin East High School is seeking a dedicated advisor to support TRIO: Talent Search participants, guiding 9th–12th graders through college readiness, admissions, and financial aid processes.

The role requires coordinating services, maintaining records, and delivering workshops on academic success and postsecondary pathways within an urban high school setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or similar field.
  • Experience designing and delivering student advising in a TRIO or related program.
  • Ability to work with 9th–12th grade students and first‑generation college‑bound participants.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, recruit, and serve an assigned caseload of project participants in 9th–12th grades.
  • Provide academic advising, college, career, financial literacy, and financial aid information.
  • Maintain participant files and document contacts and services performed.
  • Enter participant data into the project database and generate reports.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
  • Identify, recruit, and serve an assigned caseload of Project Participants in 9th-12th grades
  • Provide academic advising, college, career, financial literacy, and financial aid information and workshops to Project Participants
  • Provide all 12th grade Project Participants with individual technical assistance with the college admissions and financial aid process
  • Establish Project Participant files with required documentation
  • Enter Project Participant demographics into the Project database
  • Document all contacts with Project Participants on Individual and/or Group Service Logs
  • Enter all contacts with Project Participants into the Project database.
  • Generate daily, weekly, monthly demographic and contact reports from the Project database
  • Assist Director, Workforce Development Programs to generate the Annual Performance Report.
  • Adhere to agency and Project policies and procedures.
  • Comply with grant and federal regulations

Qualifications: SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Bachelors Degree required in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or an appropriate field from an accredited college or university related to Project objectives
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience working for a TRIO federal program or similar related project/program serving low income and potential first generation college students (grades 9-12)
  • Experience providing academic advising services, 21st Century employability skills (CPP #1), non-cognitive skills (CPP#3), college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy information is an assigned caseload of secondary school students
  • Experience advising and assisting low-income and potential first-generation college students with the college admissions and financial aid process on an individual and group basis
  • Ability to effectively maintain a caseload of Project Participants and provide them with services and activities
  • Knowledge of basic computers skills including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish working relationships with school contacts
  • Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by low income and potential first generation college youth in the target area
  • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Project Participants
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED:
  • Masters Degree required in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or an appropriate field from an accredited college or university related to Project objectives
  • Five years professional experience working for a TRIO federal program or similar related project/program serving low income and potential first generation college students (grades 9-12)
  • 3-5 years of experience providing academic advising services, 21st Century employability skills (CPP #1), non-cognitive skills (CPP#3), college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy information is an assigned caseload of secondary school students
  • 3-5 years of experience advising and assisting low-income and potential first-generation college students with the college admissions and financial aid process on an individual and group basis
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds
  • Must be able to remain alert and energetic for 8 hours or more
  • Must be able to maneuver around an office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Continuous operation of computer and all other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and printer
