JOB SUMMARY:

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision-makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 275 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Economics Program and Scholl Chair in International Business seeks a highly motivated Fellow or Senior Fellow to play a key role in advancing the program’s research agenda that explores topics related to international economic issues and how they impact U.S. competitiveness and economic security. Key areas of focus will include trade policy, supply chain resilience, investment policy, international finance, competition policy, economic governance, and the reimagining of multilateral economic institutions.

Established in 1981, the Scholl Chair examines the relationship of international trade and investment to economic growth, innovation, and development. In a time of accelerating global integration and financial instability, America’s role on the world stage is influenced by its ability to effectively integrate trade and international economic objectives into its broader foreign policy.

The Fellow or Senior Fellow will be responsible for conducting independent research projects that aim to shape key policy debates and inform both public and private organizations. The Fellow or Senior Fellow will be expected to author and co-author policy and research reports in internal and external publications, as well as to develop and deliver research briefings and presentations to key stakeholders.

Ideal candidates will have experience in research and policy development within a specific field of international economics, as well as a strong interest in U.S. economic security and geopolitics.

The salary band for a fellow is $70,000-$140,000; the salary band for a senior fellow is $85,000 to $175,000. Salary and title will be determined based on the level of experience and expertise of the chosen candidate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Research

• Conduct research and develop policy analysis to advance the Program’s research agenda.
• Write and publish reports, commentaries, articles, op-eds, and qualitative policy analysis to promote research findings and objectives.
• Synthesize large amounts of information, perform quantitative data analysis, and report results to diverse audiences.
• Contribute to the intellectual vitality of the Program by serving as a recognized expert in the field of international economic policy.

Outreach

• Serve as an influential voice on a specific area of international economic policy, promoting the Program’s expert analysis with a diverse set of stakeholders, thought leaders, government executives, policymakers, journalists, and the general public.
• Represent CSIS as an expert at conferences, workshops, and other public speaking engagements, and donor and prospective donor engagements.
• Conceive and lead events, such as working groups, panels, roundtables to advance the program’s research and analysis.

Institutional Responsibilities

• Identify potential grant projects, research potential funders, and work with the Program Director in developing robust research proposals in line with the program’s priorities and research agenda.
• Cultivate and grow an excellent professional network and liaise productively with other organizations.
• Contribute to the thought leadership and strategic direction of the program.
• Work with and mentor research assistants and associates, to produce research and to facilitate their professional development.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

• Master’s degree in a relevant field is required.
• At least 5 years of professional experience in international or public policy development, a technical role, or in any other related field is required.
• Strong grasp of the economic statecraft that underpins U.S. trade policy. Work experience in this area is a plus.
• Experience in executing a research agenda and publishing in national and international media and in academic journals.
• Experience working in industry, government, corporate strategy, or comparable sector.
• Substantive network in and connectivity to U.S. policy officials (U.S. agencies, executive branch, congressional members/staff) and influencers in the international affairs community.
• Self-starter with proven project management experience and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Superior writing, editing, and analytical skills.
• Ability to interact and respond to questions from a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, and dispositions from across a wide spectrum of views on foreign policy and national security.
• Candidate should possess sound judgment, entrepreneurial attitude, and creative outlook.
