Job summary

YMCA of Upper Palmetto is seeking a Part Time Assistant Taekwondo Instructor at the Indian Land YMCA facility. Under supervision of the Master Taekwondo Instructor and program leadership, you will teach safe, engaging Taekwondo classes and support events.

You will adapt instruction to various ages and abilities, maintain a clean, safe environment, reinforce YMCA values of respect, integrity and teamwork, and assist with class setup.

Qualifications

• 3+ years taekwondo teaching experience.
• Ability to understand and teach curriculum set by the Master Instructor.
• CPR/AED/FIRST AID within 30 days of hire.
• Current Bloodborne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention Certifications.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide a safe and effective Taekwondo program.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Part Time
Under supervision of the Master Taekwondo Instructor, Program Director or Branch Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Assistant Taekwondo Instructor is responsible for instructing safe, effective and fun Taekwondo classes, as well as enhancing the quality and growth of the program and retention of the participants in the program. The Assistant Taekwondo instructor will assist the Master Taekwondo Instructor, Program Director or Branch Director with various branch activities such as special events, seminars, and other activities that occur on various occasions.

• Provide a safe and effective program in accordance with current taekwondo practices.
• Supervise and guide the participants through Taekwondo instruction.
• Be aware of the various abilities of the participants and potential problems associated with poor technique.
• Provide a safe and clean environment by keeping the area clean and free of obstacles.
• Report to supervisor any equipment that is not working properly or any incidents that occur.
• Assist in and/or set up and take down equipment required for the class.
• Assist in keeping all equipment clean, organized and secure.
• Adapting and addressing needs within class as they occur.
• Developing and ability to instruct appropriate curriculum relevant to the age, safety, and expertise of the class and participants.
• Know and follow emergency procedures as situations warrant.
• Start and finish classes on time.
• Act as a substitute for class if requested by the Master Instructor and/or assist Master instructor in class.
• Appropriate clothing and uniform in accordance with Taekwondo practice.
• Greet each participant. Name recognition is important in making the participant feel welcome.
• Attend all classes and tastings as needed.
• Attend scheduled staff meetings and special events.
• Communicate schedules and updates with parents in a kind and professional manner.
• Encourage and practice self-defense and safety components of taekwondo.
• Promote defense and tenets as a practice of Taekwondo such as courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit, instead of injury or to hurt others.
• Provide constructive and positive feedback to students, parents, and supervisors.
• Follow the YMCA mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that builds a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

• Knowledge and Understanding of Taekwondo.
• 3+ years of Taekwondo teaching experience.
• Ability to understand and teach curriculum set by the Master Instructor.
• Completed training and testing of a black belt degree or higher.
• Fulfill any continuing education or training requirements needed to be effective in role.
• CPR/AED/FIRST AID for Adult and Pediatric within 30 days of hire.
• Current Bloodborne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention Certifications.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability and willingness to approach participants in a non-threatening manner to correct form, offer suggestions and diffuse potentially volatile situations.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Team Player (willing and able to assist participants and other instructors).
• Have a positive attitude and desire to achieve the mission of the YMCA of Upper Palmetto.
• Physical Requirements; carrying, seeing, hearing, speaking, running, crouching, lifting (25lbs) and walking.
