Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide. We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineering Manager to join our Aerospace Systems Engineering group. Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Aerospace Systems Engineering, this role will lead and provide systems engineering and specialty engineering support for precision munition and hypersonic weapon system programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises a growing group of systems engineers with varying levels of experience, expertise, and skills.
  • Provides mentoring to less experienced staff members.
  • Ensures GA processes are understood and followed by Aerospace Systems Engineering staff.
  • In coordination with the Senior Manager of Aerospace Systems Engineering, is responsible for reviewing resumes of systems engineering candidates, conducting interviews, and selecting candidate(s) to hire to enhance the group’s skill depth and breadth.
  • Drives rapid resolution of delays that impact system engineering activities.
  • Communicates effectively in real-time with leadership.
  • Coordinates with program management to assign appropriately skilled systems engineers to tasks.
  • Supports development of staffing resource plans, master schedules, status reports, program management reviews, etc.
  • Assesses impacts to programs including verification plans and activities, schedules, etc. due to proposed design and requirement changes.
  • Supports Earned Value Management (EVM) reporting; responsible for schedule/cost performance on assigned tasks/projects.
  • Supports and champions Model Based Systems Engineering initiatives, tool adoption and work flow improvements, and MBSE socialization and training for design engineering teams
  • Supports use of Weapon Open System Architecture (WOSA) interface control definitions and the Air Force’s Government Reference Architecture in new weapon system development efforts.
  • Serves as Lead Systems Engineer on one or more projects, directly contributing to the technical solution(s) being developed.
  • Collaborates daily with GA and customer systems engineering, design, logistics, and other teams throughout the design, development, analysis, integration, and test of complex weapon systems.
  • Supports interactions with internal and external stakeholders and customers to identify user needs.
  • Leads the development and management of technical requirements for weapon systems such as missiles, projectiles, and hypersonic vehicles.
  • Provides expert knowledge of systems engineering including CONOPS development, requirements definition and derivation, requirements flow down and management, requirements validation and verification planning, risk management, trade study planning and execution
  • Supports proposal development through contributions to technical volumes, cost basis of estimates, work breakdown structure development, schedule definition, and peer reviews.
  • Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in engineering or a related technical field as well as eleven or more years of progressively complex engineering experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates technical expertise in the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
  • Must possess the ability to resolve complex management and technical problems.
  • Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
  • Customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • A Professional Engineering License, and original work(s) published in professional engineering journals are desirable.
  • Familiar with Earned Value Management work package management or similar schedule/cost reporting frameworks.
  • Previous experience managing or leading groups of engineers or other technical personnel through system design, development, integration, and test phases.
  • Required: experience using DOORS and Cameo/MagicDraw
  • Highly desirable: experience with the development of one or more of the following - avionics, seekers, RF systems, missiles, or projectiles.
  • Highly desirable: active membership and involvement in, or certification by, INCOSE or similar systems engineering organization.
  • Desirable: experience in system-level and detailed electrical, software, or mechanical design.

  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
Travel expectation
  • Must have an active DoD security clearance with ability to upgrade to Top Secret level if required.
