As an Engineering Systems Intern, you will work alongside product development and manufacturing teams to understand how SICK products are designed, built, tested, and supported throughout their lifecycle. You will help document product architectures, manufacturing processes, and recurring engineering challenges while supporting efforts to improve engineering efficiency, product quality, and business performance.

This role provides exposure to real-world engineering operations and offers an opportunity to develop systems-thinking skills while working with cross-functional teams across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in creating and maintaining engineering documentation, process maps, and visual representations of how products and production systems operate.
  • Investigate recurring engineering, manufacturing, and quality issues by collecting and organizing relevant data.
  • Support root-cause analysis efforts and identify trends impacting product performance, manufacturability, or operational efficiency.
  • Help maintain and organize engineering improvement backlogs, technical debt lists, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist engineering teams in evaluating and prioritizing improvement opportunities based on customer impact, business value, cost, quality, and risk.
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, and quality engineers to understand how various disciplines contribute to product success.
  • Develop reports, dashboards, presentations, and recommendations to communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Learn how customer requirements, engineering decisions, manufacturing capabilities, and business objectives are connected.
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements, standardization opportunities, and documentation enhancements.
  • Work closely with a manager and mentor to develop professional engineering skills and industry knowledge.
  • Present internship findings and recommendations at the conclusion of the internship.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications
  • Pursuing an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field.
  • Interest in product development, manufacturing, engineering processes, or continuous improvement.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, product documentation, and manufacturing work instructions.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Comfortable gathering information from multiple sources and documenting findings clearly.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Siemens NX, or similar tools is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering teams.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to engage with engineers, technicians, and business stakeholders.
  • Curious, self-motivated, and eager to learn.
